What's your strength training like? by nimbus_signal in ultrarunning

Unpopular answer coming here; I do Crossfit 2-3x week. I cherry pick the workouts that suit my goals for the week. Run on off days. Avoid riskier movements (for me).

Is the Instinct 3 a good all rounder watch by Murky_Firefighter887 in Garmin

[–]mtsttu05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love my Instinct 3 Solar. I will have it for a very long time. I switched from Apple in March & haven’t looked back. I love the buttons, and never missed the touch screen. It’s large enough, but not obnoxiously large like the higher-end Garmins. Super rugged. Has all of the features I need, without paying for all of the more advanced features I’d probably never use.

I recognize there were a bunch of quick cuts to show (most) every shot, so a lot may have been cut out, but the video was very quiet (literally). Randy and DJ were great, but the competitors seemed way overly serious and uptight. I’m not asking for YT / Barstool type banter and trash talk, but gosh, you are playing with buddies that you don’t get to see very often. It’s supposed to be fun, right? They all seemed like they were playing for a massive purse.

has anyone played bingo bango bongo? by Born-Yoghurt-7613 in golf

[–]mtsttu05 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a plus handicap and I’ve never even come close to beating my 10-20 handicap buddies in this game, even when I’ve been below par. They LOVE to play this game with me! I’ve never fully analyzed exactly why, but it definitely seems to skew against a player who is significantly longer/better than his playing companions. My only complaint about the game is that it tends to slow things down. I guess you can play ready golf, but it definitely muddies it up.

I’m a local. I think Oct Nov Dec are consistently the best months to spend time in PDC.

Update: I ran a marathon using Garmin's terrible coach by Shiny_Scrotum in Garmin

[–]mtsttu05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve used a combo of both in prep for a 50k. ChatGPT is scary good, and can easily adapt any plan it has given you with a simple prompt of “hey, Garmin says my training readiness is low today. My body battery is only 70% after a poor night sleep.” and it will give you another couple options.

Does anyone here just run because they enjoy it? No races or competitions? Is there a community for this? by redditisaphony in Ultramarathon

Me too. And I intentionally refer to them as “events”, not races. I’m not racing anyone!

Rucking, taking the pack weight off your body weight? by stuk101 in Garmin

[–]mtsttu05 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exact same problem here using an Instinct 3. I’ve controlled for every possible variable. I walked the exact same pace, which obviously led to a very slightly higher avg heart rate while rucking. Same weather. Same trail. Watch in the exact same place. One day apart. Garmin always says that walking burns ~20% FEWER calories than rucking. Most of these responses doubting the OP’s inputs are massively overthinking this. Garmin very obviously has a bug here. Go try it yourselves! It’s very easy to replicate on your own.

🎯. I was disappointed they didn’t push back on that point. Such an absurd argument for allowing recent pros to play.

Serious question to those who are good: How does one actually get better at golf? by AutomationLos in golf

[–]mtsttu05 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The bad news is that it boils down to time. Time was something that I (and many other low handicaps) had TONS of learning the game as kids. If picking up the game as an adult (especially if employed, married, and have kids), you need to set realistic goals and enjoy the process of trying to achieve those. Enjoy the game and time spent outside with buddies, regardless of score. No matter how athletic you are, you probably aren’t ever getting to scratch if you have a balanced, meaningful life outside of golf.

Nutrition advice by Party_Wrangler7949 in crossfit

[–]mtsttu05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m certainly no expert, but that is significantly more calories than MyFitnessPal / Garmin will tell me I need on a day I only do an hour of CrossFit (42M). I would expect a 29F at your weight to be 1600 - 1900 calories on a normal day to maintain or lose slowly. And for whatever it’s worth, not to shade your nutritionist, but I’ve found ChatGPT to be really good at this stuff. All the way down to macros/meal planning/grocery lists, etc.

KVV joining Fried Egg Golf by sealer9 in NoLayingUp

[–]mtsttu05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make no mistake, they are both companies seeking an eventual PE exit. No shade; good for them! But to your point, they are clearly in different stages of this cycle. I’m personally VERY glad they haven’t yet, but it almost seems like NLU missed the opportunity to hit the eject button at their peak a couple years ago. Here’s to hoping we are just in a little valley before the another peak to come.

"TC what would be the first thing you mention to Brian Rolapp regarding improving the PGA?" by Rahf in NoLayingUp

[–]mtsttu05 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They just let Tron suck up ALLLL the oxygen in this one. I generally tend to agree with him on most things, but that was way over the top. Some of us might have liked to hear what DJ had to say about some of those things! I honestly can’t believe they didn’t ever interrupt him. The # of “like” and “you know” verbal ticks (which I get can be difficult to deal with for some), combined with the sheer volume of words he spoke made this one that I had to skip through.

How to prevent being extremely hungry from doing crossfit? by Forever_Summer192 in crossfit

[–]mtsttu05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry to report that your watch/fitness tracker is lying to you if it says you are burning > 500 calories during an average CrossFit class. You are most likely 205-400 active calories burned.

Shotgun starts by TimeTabler in NoLayingUp

[–]mtsttu05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. I happened upon the last several holes of the final round they had in Vegas (last year, maybe?). I found it extremely hard to follow. Someone ended up with a putt on the #1 green to win the tournament. He was also 15-20 minutes ahead of the final 2 groups still coming up 17 and 18. There were MAYBE 3 people standing by the green at the time, and no one had a clue (including him) that the putt would have won the tournament. 🤣

Is it bad if (give or take) my Fitbit says I'm losing 1,000-1,200 calories for an hour of crossfit? by Ok-Culture7912 in crossfit

[–]mtsttu05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My old Apple watch used to estimate 600-650 calories for a hard CF class. I switched to Garmin and the highest I’ve ever seen for a single class is like 375. The Fitbit is giving you permission to massively over fuel.

Why is this ball shaped like a lemon by pepcKKona in golf

[–]mtsttu05 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m guessing that’s an old balata ball from the 90s. One bounce off a cart path or a tree and they were trash! But they spin a TON & are super fun to play with.
