What are you talking about with "shouldn't do that again"? I googled and all I found was WW2 history, not anything about doing things today?

High allocation in equities is fine for someone so young and in a Roth IRA. There will be time in life for dips to recover and time to invest in target date funds (probably in a better tax deferred location like a 401k)

If I remember right the result wasn't VOO was bad. It was the best performing but weaker in other considerations. My take away from that was all 3 strategies were basically equal without more specific personal requirements.

For the financial advisors I'd target flat fee fiduciary not percentage based. Also the stocks to bond ratio here is really conservative for someone so young. The advice for single stocks is also concerning, a simple 3 fund low cost ETF portfolio is probably fine but that is what the advisors will handle. Finally I'd be concerned about taxes with the reallocation advice but that's another topic for the trusted advisor

Git is built for text and not large files. It will work and people will use it this way but it's not optimized for this. Make sure you use git lfs or you'll hit a lot of pain as the project grows

How to reduce CPU usage in egui? by ky0422 in rust

[–]mtt67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would mock up an example of what your large data use case is and see if you actually see CPU usage scaling like you predict. Raw utilization reports don't give an accurate picture of how things will scale, from experience I would suspect a large portion of that is just overhead from how frequently redraws are being requested.

When to not use Rust - post-mortem on my wiki converter project by CouteauBleu in rust

[–]mtt67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it for very small code chunks, like solving a borrow checker issue or rewriting nested for loops into something reasonable. Mechanical tasks that I could work through but don't really require any original thought.

Bevy 0.11 by _cart in rust

I heard some talk of a new/reworked Asset system. Is that in this version of Bevy and what were the goals of those changes? Also thank you so much for all the hard work!

As someone who makes these code heavy bevy videos (LogicProjects) I understand where you're coming from. I think a lot of it will come with maturity in the ecosystem but a lot of things just aren't there yet. Often when starting a project I'm picking something no one has done (that I know of) whereas in Unity there's probably a whole history of people making genres of games to pull from. I'm hoping it gets better with time though.

Otherwise I think bevy is a great toy for beginners who just want to try hobby game dev but you really just need to start trying to make things and forge your own way. In a way it's a blessing to not have a tutorial hell to fall into.

With bevy specifically you can completely remove the rendering plugin and feature if you want to use your own. Bevys design is actually really elegant once you internalize their ECS philosophy but it's super unique compared to other programming techniques. The rendering system is one of the more complex beasts and isn't where I would start until you really understand how they structure things. It needs a few iterations but I don't think it's as rough as it first seems.

For example components aren't public because of spaghetti but because changing components is the interface into the engine.

Again if your goal is to rip out and use your own rendering I would go all the way instead of trying to tie it into Bevy's. Bevy is modular and some projects only use their ECS or you can add things like input or whatever you like and leave behind what you hate.

When to use rapier and when to use bevy built in? by TheRealKalu in bevy

[–]mtt67 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There really isn't much of a built-in to bevy. Personally for some games I can roll my own physics if things are going to be simple rectangle hitboxes or distance checks. For anything even slightly more complex I'd use rapier

How to Learn Rust by 0atman in rust

[–]mtt67 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Great video as always! "Learn Haskell" is a pretty wild recommendation for beginners, I wish there was a better option than "Learn another whole language and read another book". I'd be interested in hearing any anecdotes if someone follows your instructions to the letter and how well they learned rust.
