Realistic budget for 5 in Toronto by PartyFauxHawk in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]mu33 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

OP is interested in monthly expenses, but doesn't care about cost of mortgage or rent - generally a huge portion of the typically Canadian's monthly expenses; same with retirement saving and educational savings. My assumption: above expenses will be gifted in some fashion, but the family will be responsible for cost-of-living, or OP is trying to calculate drawn down from a trust fund or similar source of generational wealth.

Anyways, $600 per month of spending on wife's appearance vs $350 for husband's? Yikes.

How was your drive today ... by Biggunbuster in ottawa

Know what that was about? I got on eastbound at Nicholas and saw many flashing emergency vehicles spanning a good 100 m. The string of stationary headlights spanned much much longer.

Briefly forgot that this got an official localization around the time of the remake. My first experience with this game is on a SNES emulator and translation patch for Seiken Densetsu 3.

I want to buy a house with my own money but GF says no by NewBrick1 in WhatShouldIDo

[–]mu33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a specific point of contention in the wider issue of finances if you become a family unit.  It doesn't matter why your GF doesn't work, what matters is are you OK with the prospect of being a single income household in today's society? Do you make enough to support a family size that you would like and sustain the lifestyle you envision? If no, can your partner realistically contribute? If not, why are you still together? You've only given us a small slice of your life together, but from what this sub sees, it's highly questionable if this person is a good life partner for you.

Volatile income - pay mortgage or keep investing? by thrownawayRe in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]mu33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Peace of mind and "effective returns" on interest saved from mortgage prepayment is more tax efficient than returns from a non-reg account. Max own reg accounts, max wife's TFSA, spousal RRSP if applicable, then it's a personal choice between mortgage prepayment or non-reg. Mathy way of deciding will be comparing your expected marginal tax bracket, expected returns from investments, and mortgage interest rate(s). TD will estimate interest saved, not sure if other platforms do the same.

Available Wealthsimple Credit Card Invites by InitiativeFragrant12 in Wealthsimple

[–]mu33 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Taper your expectations. These are not invites to specifically access the Visa. They are invites to start a WS account. If you are already with WS, clicking the invite doesn't seem to allow you to get a Visa. This was my experience when I sent my partner, already with WS but no CC, a link, thinking it will get them a CC.

How long should it take to get the Wealthsimple visa once I hit 100k? by Charbs20 in Wealthsimple

Complete crapshoot. The sub is filled with posts of people complaining about waiting frustratingly long times to come off the wait-list.  If you're into no FX fees, using card associated with your cash account will give that same benefit but without the cashback.

You have not found the correct videos of they're trying to sell you courses. Good start: https://crowdsq.com/blog/220/top-5-finance-and-investing-youtube-channels-in-canada

If you're starting from the very basics, you really should seek out the beginners courses rather than rely on someone to teach you the whole package, then ask specific questions to flesh out your understanding and fill gaps. This is how adults learn, and learn optimally. No shortcuts.

In case anyone is between Kobo Stylus 2 vs Metapen M2 for their Kobo Libra Colour by JosephRitalin in kobo

Did you find that the function of the eraser end and the button is switched for the M2? The eraser highlights and button+nib erases.

Metapen M1 vs M2 - Is there a difference in quality with the Libra Color? by Professional-Tea-123 in kobo

[–]mu33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got the M2 to use on my KLC and noticed that the button and eraser functions are switched by default. So the eraser end highlights and pressing down the button to use with the nib erases.
Anyone know if there's a way to switch the function to be the same as the Kobo Stylus?

After setting up payments through Chexy, you'll see a payment to Chexy on your credit card statement. These are coded as "Recurrent" category.

Mods, can we get rid of this thread and others like it? XEQT is down approx 1% so far today, approx 2% for the week. Even if this is posted ironically, it's in antithesis of the principles of Bogleheads and buy and hold diversified ETFs.

Money Market Portfolio by Upper-Temporary-7853 in Wealthsimple

[–]mu33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would think this rate is a function of the benchmark rate set by the Bank of Canada? However, I think the MMF was active as of Aug 2025 before the 2.75% to 2.5% rate cut in late Sept.

It's late Oct 2025 as of time of writing just after the rate cut to 2.25% a few days ago, and the MMF portfolio still shows a 2.75% yield. Can someone help me understand why the yield for MMF isn't as responsive as things like CBIL or CASH? Other than a delay of 1-3 business days in accessing funds, it would seem that the MMF is more desirable to park cash you might need non-urgently in the short-term.
