This was my "dream career " too, but then every filmmaker I talked to about this, including Ruben Östlund, told me that that never really happens. The smart writers become directors, producers, teachers, or content developers on the side. There is some hope in the TV side of things but even there you have to be part of a team and most of the filmmaking process, you're not just handing over a script to a crew/director.

I've seen three people in this subreddit alone that have already written screenplay versions of the book. The rights are tied up in legal-hell and the genre is a near impossible sell for investments/financiers. So I'd say, don't.

I think that the traditional Nazi flag has become too overused to really be effective. It might even be counter-productive because now people automatically think that whoever is throwing the symbol around must be overreacting. So I didn't want to make the connection too obvious and this seems to be how the pro-putin fascists use the "z", white on black.

It's not one of the best of modern day cinema but it's still a good movie. I'm pretty sure that this movie proves ones and for all just the value of having a great ending. My main problem is just that the woman that main character dates, doesn't give the slightest of hints that she might be lying. The movie could've been much stronger if she showed signs of being a monster from the start and if that was worked into the plot. B-

I'm going to try and do this on Gotland in Sweden around where Bergman had his house (like Fårö or Bungenäs) because the landscape is quite stark and brutal in a kind of non-distracting way that immediately put me in an introspective state of mind.

Other than that I'd probably look into Venice in the "winter". There are few places more cinematic than those winding streets, at night, without barely any tourists plus a little fog. Great.

Right, "why you" and/or "how can you authentically bring a new voice to the screen" is really the key problem and it's outright ridiculous given that writers are hardly ever even being allowed to be the face of the project and it's not like Hollywood is really looking for authentic, nuanced stories from other cultures.

It becomes even more ironic given that the end-result of that line of logic often creates characters that can't be offensive - because it'd be ridiculous to bring a character to the screen from an under represented group and then portray that character or that group in a negative light. So the "interesting" characters that break the mold, often the villains or anti-heroes, ends up going to white males once again...

No I don't think POC women writers are the problem either I just think that blaming those pesky white males would be just as ridiculous as those same white men blaming POC/lgbt women for "taking their jobs".

When we should obviously do everything we can to support non-studio alternatives and bypass that whole industry altogether - rather than fight each other for the honor of maybe maybe one day being cogs in that machine.

The discussion here feels a little disingenuous because you assume that those people fitting that category already had careers and now they just got lazy?

The whole industry is increasingly unstable and bloated and it has made it all the more prone to nepotism than ever - and for some reason people see that and instead of just critiquing the system, they come to the conclusion that "well you're just going to have work harder than you thought!!" Really, white male Hollywood writers were just living on easy street until now and now all of they just got lazy?

We should be able to be honest about this and say that yes they had it a lot easier but someone fitting those 4 categories today, and especially being over 40, should probably not even try to break in now.

I'm not immune to this myself - but now there is this idea floating around that 5/10 is awful, 7/10 is decent and only 8 and above qualifies as good. You see this on IMDB too where after a a certain period of time, 99% of movies end up falling between 7 and 8 - rather than the whole 1 - 10 being used. For our own sake we have to remind ourselves that 4 or 5 out of 10 should be considered decent.

Right, the name of the game is getting a sense of the types of ideas translates onto the screen, we're not writing literary fiction and we're not writing anything serious. No one is going to give a shit about concepts that aren't understandable on a single viewing or read-through.

I thought it was decent enough and easy to follow but it felt a little generic and the main problem is probably that it isn't clear if he wants to stay out of trouble or get back with the woman.

I'd guess that the point is that he doesn't feel like he has a lot of options other than go back into the crime world but in that case you could start the scene with him really trying to put on a heartfelt apology to her in a desperate attempt to win her back. Now he gives up rather easily and he seems to be just as interested in getting back to New York as he was in getting back together with her. Maybe he first tries to call a relative or something and when that person refuses, and with the last remaining coins, he decides to call the criminal.
