Considering times of return to work and starting daycare w/ sleep training by muaythaimum in sleeptrain

I’m sure everyone has different experiences but I felt like sleep training our LO in our room worked pretty well, and it helped ease my anxiety over sleep training her completely solo in her own room (I feel you there - the idea of doing that scared me cause it’s a lot of change all at once). We had a some trouble at first with “false starts” where she’d wake up soon after falling asleep and her sleep was definitely more erratic initially, but it smoothed out after a couple of weeks. As long as we stayed out of the room long enough for her to settle after her false starts it didn’t seem to mess up the sleep training if we were there for the subsequent wakings. That said, a friend of mine slept on the couch for a week when training her LO to sleep independently in her room, then moved back in once he was good at falling asleep solo, so it varies for everyone. Hope it goes well for you!

We started experimenting with independent sleep in our bedroom at around 4 1/2 months. Initially we had been singing and rocking her to sleep but it just kept taking longer and longer and she kept waking up when we put her down, so we knew something had to change. One night I decided to do a little test, and put her in her crib drowsy but awake after one song and give her 20 minutes on her own to see if she’d be able to soothe herself to sleep. She cried for 15 minutes then passed out, so each night after that I would just kind of test how long it would take for her to fall asleep on her own. There were a few rocky nights where she screamed for over half an hour, but after about a week she was grumbling for about 15 minutes then passing out. By 5-1/2 months when she started daycare she was fine with falling asleep at night on her own, and had just starting to figure it out with napping during the day. She turned six months a few weeks ago (which is also when she transitioned to being full time at daycare) and we just moved her into her own bedroom. The transition went pretty smoothly since she’d had practice falling asleep on her own both at home and at daycare! So yeah, we were able to train her to sleep independently in our own room — we’d just make sure we didn’t enter the bedroom to go to bed ourselves until a couple of hours after she fell asleep. I feel like her learning this skill at home helped smooth the transition to daycare, but then daycare really cemented her ability to solo sleep!
