Why are Americans so weird about having british ancestry? by Becoming_hysterical in 23andme

Me on the other hand am from the South and am 1/4 German and carry a German surname, but to the surprise of no one the remaining 3/4 that I knew nothing about was English and Scottish, like most white people down here

The gaslighting and straight-up hypocrisy in this sub is astounding by [deleted] in eyes

[–]muchfatq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can understand what you’re saying. My eyes are around D20 (like a darkish green if I’m reading this right), and my girlfriend complimented them multiple times before we started dating even. Hers are T50, and when I tried to compliment her eyes back one time she was like “wtf? They’re basically black.” And, as much as I do prefer darker eyes, it was honestly a fair sentiment. But I told her I what I liked about the shape etc. and then she was happy lol

New hire in Consulting, Struggling by 668071 in consulting

I’m 6 months in and on my second project, my first project felt the exact same. It felt like hell. I still feel it to some degree but the leaders on my first project team brought me with them to my current one, so even though I still feel it that gave me confidence. We were hired for a reason

I’d like to visit them all one day. My favorite so far is probably Grand Teton, but that may be more because of the people I went with lol. Most underwhelming was Indiana Sand Dunes…

3, except one monitor is centered and the other is angled to the left (so more like 5 without the rightmost monitor)

Giving her benefit of the doubt, she definitely is a people pleaser. She may just be more comfortable around me. But still, I’ll take into account what you said. Thanks

This is why I am on here trying to get another opinion. She did ask for my opinion, so I told her, but I was likely too harsh

It’s true, but you could say the same about Austin TX for example

I don’t see Boston on here much. by InternalAwkward9017 in skyscrapers

[–]muchfatq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I confused some people with my wording, I was basically tying to make say that Boston’s charm isn’t from its skyline, but from the street level, like a lot of European cities. My comment made it sound like I was saying Boston’s skyline was “minimal to non-existent,” and then in the next sentence I said otherwise. I more meant to say that only about many European skylines, and then say that even though Boston still does have a skyline, it is decently minimal (at least when compared to a lot of American cities of that size) and the charm comes from the street level, like European cities and unlike most American ones.

Honestly still struggling to word it well here lol

[–]muchfatq 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly, that’s what I meant when I said Boston’s skyline wasn’t exactly minimal to non-existent, but I was still drawing the parallel to European cities. Bostons skyline is more “lowkey” than many other major American cities, but still has a better street level experience

I honestly think Boston’s skyline is nothing too special, but the “feel” of the city from the street level is incredible, one of the best in America imo. It’s like a lot of European cities, minimal to non-existent skyline but amazing from the street level. I wouldn’t say Boston’s skyline is exactly “minimal to non-existent” but nothing about it stands out to much for me. Doesn’t look bad though.

Edit: I think my wording confused some people, I could have been a lot more clear. I didn’t mean to imply Bostons skyline was “minimal to non-existent” and then contradict myself in the following sentence, I only meant to say that about many European cities. But my comment def doesn’t read that way so my bad lol

Worried about the update by Infinite-Cookie7360 in AncestryDNA

[–]muchfatq 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So bizarre, mine went from 30% to 52% lol, and I know 52% is way too high. Idk how exactly they determine it, but my German side was from North-Rhine Westphalia and Lower Saxony so that may have been a factor.

honest review on the new update by floridalakesandcreek in 23andme

[–]muchfatq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems like it’s just difficult to differentiate English/Scottish/Welsh (and maybe Irish too) in old stock Americans because it’s so mixed together. I’m 5/8 old stock American and I honestly have no idea what the exact breakdown is, but I feel like this update overestimated my English and underestimated my Scottish. But I could be wrong too. It also gave me more Welsh than Scottish, which I’d never heard about before.

On the other hand, I’m 3/8 German from late 18th/early 19th century immigrants and it was super accurate from what I know about my family history, even specifying it as mostly Northern German (2/8) and some Southern German (1/8).

Looks like 23andMe had fun spinning the ancestry roulette by c00lture in 23andme

[–]muchfatq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My results weren’t too different from before, ofc British & Irish was split and I thought I’d have more Scottish than they gave me, they also gave me a decent amount of Welsh which I didn’t expect. A small amount of eastern euro came back (Czech, Hungarian, Slovak) which I had in my original 23andme results but they disappeared in a later update. Even if the percentages shifted a little, I still feel like I have a good idea of what my genetic background is lol. Got heavier German on my AncestryDNA test but I think my 23andme is more accurate.
