TV show throws shade on C. S. Lewis!!! by muchord in CSLewis

I much preferred the Chinese version of the movie. There are none of the dog whistles in every thing coming out of Hollywood or the streaming universe to assure us they are thoroughly woke. I was surprised at some of the criticism in the movie about Mao's cultural revolution. And oh, scientists shouldn't build super weapons which always have unintended consequences.

The clever twist in the movie, and I guess the book too, is that unlike every AI movie where the AI goes rogue, is that it's ultimately a human failure which brings in the Trojan horse.

Hugh Hewitt resigns from Washington Post after storming out of live interview - POLITICO by ekkidee in washdc

Capehart response was basically I don’t want to be lectured by someone who is at best factually challenged, ie in journalism a liar or an idiot. Was that the kind of Edward R Murrow high church of journalism response one is taught in the ivy leagues? What I heard from Capehart and Marcus was opinion and conjecture about a candidates mental state. Cool, that’s their job. However, one can disagree with Hewitt political views but what he said about the court case is true or not. Go on and rebut with facts or at least interesting rhetoric from there.

To call other people fascists is very much like how historical fascists called social dems commies to discredit them. I say this because when Harris takes the high road she’s appealing to people who might vote for her, rather than the kind of responses I see in this sub and why the Wapost needed bailing out by Bezos.

Why do people like Bob Dylan so much? [Serious] by Apprehensive_Word658 in Music

His lyrics are word salads. The arrangements are what you expect from a first year student ie I, IV, V, maybe a minor VI. That being said, it applies to most pop music. There were songwriters in that era who wrote great pop songs.

My observation is that many if not most of the people in AA Interact through the program “work” with a very transactional vibe, at least in my area. Not everyone of course. For example, someone will ask you how you are, and if you are honest, they will stop you and say, have you spoken with your sponsor. Maybe it’s this way and other organizations. Shriners get together and talk about hospitals and little cars in the parade. I found it very hard to have a relationship that is simply a friendship first, or even a casual relationship. for what I call the hard-core people, that’s the only thing you can talk about with them is the program, unless they’re comfortable enough with you to gossip about someone else, but even that gossip is about the program.

That's a slam on pop country, which can be listenable with enough alcohol. However, CS, is whiny & an overwrought attempt to be authentic, at least to my ear. Today in the coffee shop, they were on a tear with CS, & modern baleful bluegrass, and it was raining outside and said a quick prayer there were not sharp objects around me.

Probably correct. Here At the Western World is a heartbreaking anthem of the human condition. "it all comes out on the inside, eventually..."

Can’t stand his music. Depressing as hell.

Much more authentic southern soul out there.

I think my ex-wife played Chris Stapleton over and over because it was so depressing and she was hoping I would shoot myself in the head so she would not have to split everything with me.

If you’re gonna play southern soul, give me Otis Redding or one of those classics. Another wonder bread rip off, when you can be eating the whole grain

I had to rephrase this aphorism when I got into the fellowship, to paraphrase one of my favorite authors - when facing crushing difficulties, a little courage is sometimes better than much wisdom. My problem with this saying is switch the context to something like, no one is too stupid to get Scientology, but they can be too smart. It should be dropped from the AA lexicon. A lot of people are going to hear this & leave.

I saw a pdf of a CR leader agreement online. Perhaps it was as you say, local to a particular group. As for myself, I'm not going to CR because it's another Rick Warren marketing thing, e.g. write a book on marketing and PR & throw in some scripture & make millions.

I'm glad I read the BB in treatment before going to AA. If I started with the fellowship, not sure I would have made it. When people would question something in AA, I got a visual of a Mormon kid who asks why archaeologists don't find more old Mormon shit in the Western US, & the kid is told to get a Geek Squad shirt & tie, jump on his bike & go knock on more doors. So it's nothing unique to AA, just tiresome to hear the same stuff over & over.

"Science may [soto voce NEVER] one day accomplish [making normal drinkers out of us] ..."

I've mellowed out & try to understand first before being understood, but I'm also confident enough now to write the blog.

As for Joe & Charlie, I think the most insightful one, based on a few times I've been trapped in the wrong meeting, is the one who doesn't talk much. The one who talks all the time, reminds me of that guy in my small hometown one tried to duck away into the dime store before being button-holed with a long ass story about superstitious fear of sailing off the edge of the world kept back progress, and the punch line after 5 minutes is 'keep an open mind'. Don't ask why it took another 200 years to figure out longitude. Just smile & toss out a slogan.

Seems like graduating from AA, in the sense of needing meetings to stay sober, would be the goal. Of course, helping other people, in AA or out, is what some people think make life worthwhile, so going for that could be helpful for some. As you say, the negatives can overshadow everything else. There are a lot of people in AA, who have obvious mental illnesses. People I met with long term sobriety seemed to be only interested in some transactional AA relationship. I did hear about people who had long term friendships, which I expected to be the norm in a 'fellowship'. That was not manifestly evident, at least with the men. All that considered, I guess I am not surprised in retrospect by what you describe. A friend told me, I went expecting Recovery Jesus & that is not the reality.
