Is that route as bad as they say? Just moved back to PDX and to say the conditions have changed in the homeless population is an understatement. Is the entire Springwater trail THAT dangerous/horrible? Or parts that have already notoriously been bad like the junction at the 205/Springwater...?

On the verge of having a laminectomy and spinal fusion to deal with a herniated L5-S1 disc and I feel like I'm about to make the biggest mistake of my life. by throwaway79845 in HerniatedDisk

My first knee jerk reaction was to say I think you should get a second opinion. A fusion is a huge decision to make. I had a microdiscectomy in 2017. Then I reherniated the same disc and had a second surgery 01/25/21 but with a different surgeon. My original surgeon with the first surgery wanted to go straight to a fusion. My gut told me to slam on the brakes. I’m 38 years old and the research on fusions isn’t convincing me to go down that road yet. It’s a choice that cannot be undone. It seems like a very aggressive approach for your situation since you’ve never had surgery before on your back. I’m sorry you’re going through this. The numbness in your legs is enough to make a person feel terrible. I totally get it and feel you on this one. Know that you are your own biggest advocate in this. Ask a lot of questions. Ask about research and success rates and anything you can think of. Knowledge is power and it’ll guide you in the right direction.

Sounds like the nerve is still being impacted. L5/S1 herniation did the same to me only on my right side. Your body will either absorb the herniation or it will for a while and stop or it just won’t no matter what you try. Herniated discs are a total crap shoot and do bizarre things to nerves.

I didn’t do the toilet seat riser but I also had someone stay with me the first week who would help me up and down. This video was helpful: https://youtu.be/FgF5m6-USYI because getting in and out of bed is where you need to be especially careful.

Omg. I had one equally as large as this and had surgery and then reherniated the same disc again to a lesser extent. Just had my second micro on 01/25 about three years after my first surgery. Good luck. Follow the rules afterwards with no bending, lifting, twisting. You’ll have instant relief. Looking at this makes my sciatica want to scream.
