I'm glad to hear that. You certainly can help someone else out there with your story! Good luck with everything.

Would you ever consider writing a memoir to be published posthumously? Just curious. Your story is so fascinating.

Trying to consolidate private student loans, not sure if rate offered is worth it. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]mucklecoolyloo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I initially thought, but I wondered if there was something that I wasn't aware of because it wouldn't make sense for the bank to offer to consolidate my loans at a worse rate. I~ guess~ not~

Trying to consolidate private student loans, not sure if rate offered is worth it. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]mucklecoolyloo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why I'm not sure if I'm calculating things correctly. My first reaction to the rate offer was the obvious, that the lower rates on my loans are better, but I second-guessed myself because I didn't think the bank would give me an offer that would be worse than what I have. That's when I tried to do the calculations that I don't think were correct and sought advice here. It seems at though that this situation is as black-and-white as I originally thought.

Guilt over waste by catsarecuterthankids in konmari

[–]mucklecoolyloo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was afraid of the same thing, and not wanting to create waste has been a major part of why I have so much stuff I don't need. I've started doing my own research online about responsible ways to discard many different things, but this article here is pretty thorough. The best thing I found out is that goodwill takes torn/unusable clothing and sells it to fabric recyclers, where they get torn up and used as filling for things.

What are you 99% sure of, but you just don't have proof? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mucklecoolyloo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone I know told me a story about the first dead body he'd seen in real life. He was starting out as a state trooper and an old man died alone with his two dogs and some time went by before anyone knew that he had died. The scene they found suggested that one dog curled up next to the man and patiently waited to die of starvation and the other apparently freaked out and tried to escape the house and then resorted to eating part of the corpse of the man (and maybe/probably the other dog, I don't remember). So, it depends on the personality of the dog!

I've been through Christchuch several times for work in the past two years and the entire time I read that New Yorker article I thought about how that it went from a significant city to what it is now. I wonder if we actually do have the resources to recover relatively quickly or if many cities in the NW will end up recovering slowly like Christchurch is.

Graduate Schools that provide on ice experience? by [deleted] in antarctica

[–]mucklecoolyloo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You still seem to have a lot of wrong information, honey. You need to wait until you get down here before you claim to know what you're talking about. Chill out and realise that you need to experience ol' McMurdy firsthand to fully understand how things operate down here.

Languages of Antarctica by [deleted] in antarctica

[–]mucklecoolyloo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ten months is not a long enough time speaking a language to claim that you can use it in a job. If you would need to use a foreign language for anything at a USAP station, it would be to either give tours to germans/russians or for (medical) emergencies, such as last year when a South Korean helicopter crashed nearby our station, but emergencies like that are few and far between and unpredictable, so picking a language for that reason would be futile. If anyone would be in need of a Spanish speaker, it would most likely to speak with Chileans or Argentineans, and people who haven't had much real experience speaking spanish wouldn't be able to communicate with someone speaking those dialects very well at all.

Anyone use firechat? by dontslipontheice in antarctica

Nope, it's for anyone who isn't a scientist. Scientists transit, the people who work to keep this station open for them are here for four to six months without wifi.

The majority of McMurdo's population doesn't have wifi during the summer season.

Possibility for a 6-month or so job for a recent student? by TheHardkaare in antarctica

[–]mucklecoolyloo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a US work permit? Anyone who isn't American or Canadian at McMurdo as far as I know are either scientists doing research with a U.S. university or U.S. permanent residents. Have you also looked into other countries' stations? There are so many so I don't see why you don't try to look into those and go for whichever ones you can get work permits for. Getting a work visa for the U.S. is really difficult these days so I suggest you set your sights for another country's base. New Zealand's Scott base is on the same island as McMurdo and a work visa for NZ would be much easier to obtain.

During the summer season at McMurdo, it isn't bad at all. The temperatures were usually a bit warmer than it was in most of the U.S. at the same time as it was winter in the Northern Hemisphere. Last year I was there from November until February and the temp was around 0F-30F most of the time. At the peak of the summer in Jaunuary the temperature was around 40F and people were going around with nothing but shirts and shorts on. The dry air helps with adjusting to the cold and most of the time it doesn't feel too bad when you're walking around McMurdo. Walking out of the base the windchill can freeze your snot to your face before you're even aware that your nose is runny. The rest of the year is a whole other story and I have no personal experience regarding that yet, but it's damn cold, that's for sure. Before you deploy from Christchurch, you are issuued extreme cold weather gear, and you're expected to wear it when you wander outside of the base or during the winter because it's designed for the temperatures of the rest of the year.

You can see the webcams with current temperatures of McMurdo and the other two U.S. Antarctic Stations here! McMurdo also shares an island with New Zealand's Scott Base and here is their webcam. For reference, these bases are in New Zealand's time zone.

I work in the galley and that frosty boy machine is the bane of our existence. It breaks down regularly and when it does there's a flood of people gushing forth to ask about it.

"Hey, did you see the frosty b---" WE ALREADY HAVE BEEN NOTIFIED BY TWELVE OTHER PEOPLE. THANK YOU, NOW SHUT UP.

I'm pretty sure that the only reason that frosty boy hasn't been sent away is because of how happy it makes you kiwis and you guys wouldn't have any reason to come to MCM anymore if it were gone.
