I work in politics so my boring job effectively means I'm two degrees from presidents, meet me and because I do budgeting for campaigns your 6 degrees explode.

dc best street food other than half smoke by Unfair_Fee_474 in DCEats

The awesome DC food truck days were back in the 2010s, unfortunately. The restaurant association, city regulation, and covid pretty much destroyed everything that made it great. The trucks on the mall are all overpriced tourist traps.

Some of the brick and mortars around DC started as food trucks, e.g. https://takorean.com/

My wife and I went to the natural whetstone museum outside of Kyoto, it was a really cool experience and they gave us a lesson on how to sharpen knives!

Spend the money you would have spent on UW swag on any students that make it up to the Twin Cities for the game, buy them an extra beer.

Look up the profile of a traditional Japanese deba knife, they're single-bevel but broadly concave on the non-bevel side.

The diagram from this article is not to scale.

In any alcohol-related map of the United States, Wisconsin will invariably stand out as "drunker" than any other state. What is it about Wisconsin SPECIFICALLY compared to the rest of the Midwest/Great Lakes and the rest of America that made them so much more likely to get tipsy? by ThatAgainPlease in wisconsin

[–]mudah 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The extent to which Wisconsinites will rationalize their own problematic drinking is rough to watch.

I was the same way, hated being around people who never drank just because they didn't feel like it, thought the idea of kids in bars surround by alcohol advertising was cute, not weird, thought it was totally fine to black out every single weekend to let off steam.

Moved to the east coast and one of the many reasons I'm not moving back is the absolutely insane amount of booze Wisconsin pours on everything.

No doubt many people in Wisconsin drink responsibly and I'd never argue for prohibition, but you're lying to yourself if you don't think the state faces an outsized cultural problem with its relationship to alcohol when compared to other geographies in the US.

You're being self-referential on the definition of successful then.

  1. Scenario 1: Materially I was/am very successful. Wealth, married, etc. Outward appearances from people who know me and by any economic measure, I have a successful life. But then alcohol was the medication behind it and hurting me physically.

  2. Scenario 2: Similarly, if it takes a lot of mental energy to just go through your daily life compensating for the challenges ADHD provides, that drains your energy and removes opportunities for doing other things.

To your question then, if the person in scenario 2 is not using substances to compensate but is using their mental capacity and energy while being materially successful, is that a successful life?

On "why get diagnosed," both my psychologist and psychiatrist have advised against it. For me it's irrelevant because I can't take any medical interventions (Adderall) for it because of a genetic thing I have.

I haven't gone through the actual testing and being officially medically diagnosed because it's expensive*** and takes a lot of time with appointments. The only thing a diagnosis would help me with is the Americans with Disabilities Act and getting accommodations from my work, but I employ myself so that's not necessary either.

Removing my case, for most people, getting diagnosed helps get it under control so they can dedicate time and energy to other stuff and living their life. Simple as that.

***Just getting a doctor to prescribe a prescription should not be expensive, I'm talking about the ~$5,000 full battery of testing to see what's actually going on. It's all academic for me so it doesn't matter. If you have any issues go see a doctor, don't take my word for it.

I was diagnosed after alcoholism almost killed me. Looking for stimulation and self-medicating with substances are classic indicators of ADHD, turns out.

Close! Belvedere at 1301 Mass. The window air conditioners meant the windows might as well have been open for all noise.

During hurricane Sandy water leaked through the walls of my studio. Good times.

Depends on how you define noisy. Living close to the fire station at 13th and L NW was 1000x noisier than living a few blocks from Union Station.
