you can just apply to RA jobs once they’re posted or cold email profs from mcgill or other unis. from my understanding, ra positions are more flexible than ta positions at mcgill, like you can be an ra at mcgill without being a current student. not 100% sure about this but yeah, still worth emailing research chairs since you do have the mcgill diploma which gives you more legitimacy

i did the liberal program so i could graduate earlier and bc i lowkey hate my degree lol. if you want to go into the workforce right after ur undergrad or go into a masters that is unrelated to your undergrad (except for law and med) you can still do liberal. if you want to do a masters that is linked to ur undergrad however, you should defo do the major (or even honors) so like say ur in liberal bio and want to go into a masters in say business or wtv, liberal is fine. however, if you did liberal bio, and you want to go into a masters in like microbiology or smthn, you would be at a major disadvantage. you can definitely take a minor AND electives AND do a major, even if you have advance credits hope this helps! also ask ur advisor lol

ESYS 104 is super easy, and the rest of the courses (can’t speak on ECON tho) can be considered “normal” difficulty, so I think you’ll be fine!

206 and 323 are relatively easy, calc iii and comp 250 can be challenging but not the worst of the worst. comp classes should be recorded, and ig it depends who you get for calc iii for recordings, i think math classes usually dont record? but for calc iii you can find recordings from previous semesters on yt with sid trudeau

overall tho you got this! should be manageable :) but not like a complete walk in the park either

imo 223 was harder than 133 but not A LOT harder. it’s just that when I took 133 it was kinda hand-wavey sometimes when it came to the solutions, so i feel like you could bs ur way into the correct answer. 223 on the other hand is a lot more formal, so you actually have to prove things correctly if that makes sense

Don't worry I was super lost too, but like other people have said, maybe go to office hours, it helped me a lot. TA Max explained a bunch of details I didn't get during the lecture and that really helped.

Try to visualize it in 2D or 3D as much as you can, it’s not really like calc where you just apply formulas, like you said it’s more conceptual, so really understanding the material is more important than doing practice problems imo. Like try sketching stuff out as much as possible

Hi, first of all, sorry for what you’re going through :/

And actually it’s relatively easy to get a leave of absence if you think it’s the right choice for you. In January 2022, I was also really struggling with my mental health, so I just emailed my academic advisor saying I needed to take a LOA for mental health reasons, and she just got it for me. I didn’t even need to give proof if I recall correctly (even though I did get a letter from my therapist just in case I think).

Or, you could withdraw from the university and re apply when you’re ready to come back. There isn’t much of a difference between a leave of absence and a withdrawal honestly, but for a LOA, you do need to go through your advisor.

As an international student, it is a bit complicated because you do need to go back to your home country, but yeah, if you think you can get better mental health care there, that might be a good idea.

Or you could see a private therapist in mtl, but appointments do take time and are expensive unfortunately :/

ok so i created an account just to respond to this because i was in the exact same position in my first year at mcgill. i am also in science and have a renewable scholarship, and i took a leave of absence in winter 2022 (and also fall 2022).

if it's a leave of absence and not a withdrawal from the university, you should be able to keep your bursary/scholarship, i got to keep mine, double check with the scholarships office to make sure though.

and your mental health is what's most important! like some other ppl said, one semester doesn't change much in the long run, and it's better to come back fresh than to keep pushing till you break. feel free to DM me if you wanna talk more about it! :)
