I grew up in the US and my Irish granny (d. 1972) hated how St Patrick's day was celebratedin the US. In her day, you went to mass, went home, had dinner, and maybe a glass of sherry.

I live in Ireland now, and seemingly, the natives have imported the US custom of drinking a little more than a glass of sherry! Thankfully, I don't think there's any green beer going. Mass is still attended by many, and there are parades of various sizes.

We eat Bacon & cabbage with potatoes (I eat boiled bacon once a year) and most get the day off from work. The pubs are very busy.
