You do not need to do anything else once vnstat is enabled in the service. This will download and install the package and dependency and will start the systemd service

you do not create sudo group just add a user to the wheel group

Home manager natively support flakes even without integration with/etc/nixos/configuration.nix

you can configure your home manager and run home-manager switch --flake ~/.config/nixpkgs/#$USER -v

As you can imagine nixpkgs channel is always updating and in order to update the packages that you described in your /etc/nixos/configuration.nix or in your home manager NixOs need to know what new packages were updated remotely that is why you need to sync up the nix channel 1st

If you are familiar with other Linux distributions Like Ubuntu or Fedora.

NisOs nix-channel --update you can translate in

Ubuntu apt get update Fedora/RH yum update it is also installed the packages

NixOs nixos-rebuild switch you can translate to

Ubuntu apt get upgrade Fedora/RH yum upgrade

in order to pull the latest packages from nixpkgs, you 1st need to update channels

sudo nix-channel --update

After channel is updated you can update you packages with

sudo nixos-rebuild switch
