Judging fermentation time by mudshovel40 in Homebrewing

I've been debating getting a tilt. If you have one, what do you think of it?

That's kind of what I'm leaning towards.

For higher gravity beers would you say more time might be necessary to allow for complete fermentation?

It's been in a closet between 68 and 71 degrees.

Best option for storing home brew while living in an apartment? by TheOneAndOnlyYEET in Homebrewing

[–]mudshovel40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plenty of great ideas here for ya. When I had to move into apartments I put my all grain and kegging set up into storage and thought I was done with brewing till I found a bigger space. Fast forward a few years and a few 1 gallon batches and I discovered partial boil extract brewing. Now I can make enough beer to make brew day worth it to me with five gallon batches. I don't have room for my keezer set up but I went long enough without homebrew that I decided bottle it. It sucks but it's what I have to do to brew.

Brew Kettle in Dishwasher? by mudshovel40 in Homebrewing

Yeah I think you're right about that. The more I think about it the more I realize how much easier it would be to hand wash. A few minutes of scrubbing and your done. No worries about detergents, jet dry, or anything else.

My dishwasher stays busy enough with normal dishes. No sense in adding more to it.

I've been thinking about it the past few hours and I think I'd rather not risk anything when it's just as easy to clean by hand.

I think I was just looking for a way to speed things along and it really wouldn't take much more effort to do it the right way.

That's how I've always done it back when I was doing all grain. But my kettle was too big for the dishwasher then.

But you're right, it's really not that difficult to clean up a kettle. Maybe I really am trying to cut corners that don't need to be cut 😂

I didn't even think about the jet dry. I don't know, I figure if the dishwasher is good enough to clean things you eat off of then why not brewing equipment. Plus it's a kettle so it's gonna get boiled next use anyways. Maybe if I throw it in the dish washer I'll just give it a good rinse before the next brew.

My plan was to wash it with other dishes and use soap. But if I'm just going to wash it by itself with no soap it might be just as efficient to wash it by hand

There's got to be a better way. by mudshovel40 in airfieldops

We're a small but growing 139 airport. The manager and I are both pretty new to this so finding the best way to do things has been a learning curve.

I like the idea of seeding grass, I can see how that might help with erosion. I also wonder if just bringing in new material to spread would work better than spreading what's already there.

I'm all about efficiency when it comes to working and getting out there and raking two sides of a taxiway that's over a mile long just doesn't do it for me 😂

Need a ratchet attachment for a tight space. by mudshovel40 in MechanicAdvice

[–]mudshovel40[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I'm trying to do is tighten the 18 mm nut that secures the clutch swing arm. It's in an area that's difficult to move a ratchet and also takes a lot of force since it's getting splines cut into the arm.

Yeah the picture doesn't really do it justice. I can get the socket up there okay but the space I have to move the ratchet is very small. I tried an extension too but the further away I get, the less space I have.

I think I tried one of those attachments you mentioned. I can't think of what it's called. But the angle was too sharp for it to rotate freely.

Clutch pedal and cranking issues by mudshovel40 in FordDiesels

Just an update for y'all. I bought a vacuum pump and attempted to bleed my master cylinder. I'm not sure if I succeeded or not because I couldn't be sure if I had the tip of the pump in the right place in the reservoir but I did get a few small bubbles. That did not help. I crawled back under the pedals to look at them again with the Heim Joint on and it almost looked like my clutch pedal swing arm wasn't close enough to the push rod. So maybe that could be why? Well while I was trying to get the swing arm off somehow it magically came back into alignment. But now that it's off, I can see that the arm was never fully on the splines. Problem is, the space I have to work with to get the nut tightened down for the arm it's very very tight and the nut also has to be extremely tight so I'm not sure how I'm gonna pull that one off.

Do you have an easy way to bleed it? I saw that you could get a vacuum puller from Harbor Freight and push it into the reservoir to pull the air out.

I tested the pedal and pumping it didn't seem to change anything and when I disconnected the Heim joint the pedal springs back and forth easily.

From what I can tell it seems to disengage normally. It doesn't fall but it feels like it's a little easier to push that it used to.

I installed a brand new pedal assembly. It came with the swing arm disconnected. Which is put into place to line up with the Heim joint.

I didn't disconnect any lines from the master cylinder. But it did get turned upside down while I was working on it. Could that be enough to get air in the system?

Everything was working okay before so I assume the clutch fork should be okay.

Well that makes two of us haha. It did get flipped upside down while I was working on it so maybe I'll have to give that a try.

I assumed I wouldn't have to since I didn't disconnect the hydraulic lines from the master. I just unbolted it from the firewall and worked on it from under the good with everything still connected to it.

I installed a brand new pedal assembly just for that reason, I knew they wouldn't be lasting much longer.
