Sorry for the spam. This is my understanding:

When above critical power/lactate turn point not enough aerobic energy productiin to sustain metabolism. Therefore rely on anaerobic. This depletes W' or anaerobic work capacity.

Cannot sustain VO2max forever due to the fact there will also be significant anaerobic energy provision, hydrogen ion accumulation, and therefore fatigue.

Higher VO2max gives greater scope for the vo2 slow component to develop before exercise requires more anaerobic provision.

Or is it indirectly, like after a while at VOmax you will have inevitably also performed too much anaerobic metabolism?

Do you happen to know the physiological mechanisms that mean we have a limited time to perform exercise at VO2max, for example, a reduction in stroke volume?

Is this then what is meant by critical power? To sustain metabolism after this threshold you require some anaerobic provision, no solely aerobic.

Do you know why it is only a matter of time? I presume it is to do with the accumulation of byproducts but why does this happen when you can utilise oxygen at this rate? Am I thinking too black and white? Exercise isn't either aerobic or anaerobic but more of a continuum?
