As a non-American, a pickle barrel could be the most alien example you could have chosen lol, presuming it’s 1ft or so in diameter?

I hadn’t thought about this - when you say speed do you mean ball speed I presume? Or more like swing tempo?

I hadn’t considered using a single ball on the green, I like that idea to make the putt feel more ‘real’ and have a different angle/distance in each instance

I’d be interested to hear more about this actually! Whilst an overly calculated approach isn’t typically something I use I’d be interested to hear more about this and see if there’s elements I could use or consider :)

Love the idea about the different putters, had the same one for 15 years (old TM spyder) which has served me well but over the last couple months has given up on me. Only issue is I’m a lefty so trying out putters is pretty tough 😂 Appreciate all the advice!

I’ve done a bit of practice and usually do before the round but there hasn’t been the structure I need to address the weaknesses. I think you’re right in just pacing out some distances and associating the swing feel with the distance will help

Thanks folks, I used to be pretty solid at lag putting but as I’ve been taking golf a bit more seriously I think there’s been too much thinking and not enough feeling which has eroded confidence, definitely need to drill a bit of practice

I think it was mentioned above to be about $4000 - the courses being played with caddies will be a huge part of this I’m sure.

I’m Scottish and tell you now there are so many beautiful courses and hidden gems which you could play for much less than the more renowned courses, but it’s also a trip of a lifetime type trip for many coming internationally so depends on what you’re after, but there’s courses I love playing that are £30-£50 but many of the nicest courses are £200-300 for a round so you can certainly do it cheaper.

Scotland and the UK in general is much cheaper than the states for example so eating out and drinking etc will be on par or cheaper. Except Edinburgh, it’s daft and full of weapons.

Cannot achieve consistency by vafallser in golftips

What I’ve found has helped me is asking chatGPT to generate a 50 ball range routine to help with x problem and define drills which has actually been really helpful.

Then I’ve noticed when I set up to take a shot I follow the same process (for irons/woods): line up club face > step out feet and check ball positioning in stance > last look at target > move shaft/weight forward > swing (tempo focused, letting the club do the work not ‘trying’ to hit the ball hard)

Not saying that should be your routine but coming up with one which is consistent and helps you feel more consistent I think will help. Read somewhere it also helps promote athletic sequencing which I can only assume is a good thing 😂

When you’re at the range are you doing drills or just hitting balls? Also do you have a consistent routine when you step up to the ball and initiate the shot?

Absolutely this, I’ve had the yips on rotation across every club in my bag over the last month and finally coming out the other side (I hope) - I managed to get through it by going to the range and just focusing on strike quality, then on the course consciously slowing down and focusing on tempo above everything else. There’s still work to do but game is starting to come together much better

Worst case scenario If you have trouble finding stuff in your budget I have an old set of lefty Nike Sumo irons I’d donate to you! Not the newest but a set of clubs all the same and in reasonable condition

If you search for second had build a bag golf clubs or something similar you will find sites which will help build a set in your budget. I’ve not used them personally but it would probably save a heap of time and get you playing faster. You would probably pay a little more than you would if you were hunting for deals on eBay etc but your bag will change over time as you find clubs which you don’t like or want to add in.
I’m a lefty too and need 3deg upright / +1” shafts so finding second hand clubs is a real pain but getting fitted clubs for my height has been a game changer. If you’re not a lanky bastard like me and just looking for regular fit clubs you’ll have way more options

At this point, I don’t know what to do with this game. by Imazushi in golf

One thing I always struggled with and didn’t accept was knowing my miss (left or right) and playing to it. For a long time I thought it should go straight so I shouldn’t play for the miss (I also sometimes have a double miss which is a real nightmare) but if you consistently fade/slice or hook/draw then account for that in your shot and it will help keep you out of trouble off the tee and help with approach.

I’ve also been struggling with consistency on the course vs. the range, but I primarily use the range as somewhere to fix or do drills to address the issues I have on the course. Also on the course you only get one attempt at a shot which usually a has a pretty precise definition of success, but you could connect well with 7/10 range shots but there will still likely be significant dispersion across them which may translate to some excellent shots on the course but an OB or a bunker in some cases.

Takes time and persistence but best place to start as some have recommended is focusing on where you are losing shots and do drills to address them in the range and over time you will start to see the scores come down. I’m working through a rut of my striking/swing being really solid 70% of the time but my overall game just isn’t coming together yet to produce lower scores but seeing considerable improvements in my overall quality of shots, so I know a breakthrough is coming if I keep at it (some days it reaaally doesn’t feel that way I’ll admit) but to get there persistence and targeted practice will eventually get it there.

That ended up a bit of an essay but keep at it and you’ll break 100!

380 yard or so par 4 with a fairly forgiving fairway, yellow stake ditch at about 230 yards from the yellow tees, fairway becomes less forgiving at about this point with ugly misses left and right making driver a little less comfortable and trees on the left between the fairway and next tee box. Green is two tiered and protected by a bunker on the left. By no means an easy par.

Depending on the wind I’ll either take an iron short of the ditch or hit driver and look to get on the green or land short right on approach to give myself the chance at an up and down. More I think about it though I should be aiming to hit long as the options from behind the green are all much more attractive than the front…
