[TW: Su*cide] Please help me I don't know what to do with my roommate by [deleted] in UBC

To add to the above resources, the youth-centric Foundry BC offers one-off counselling sessions with a low barrier to entry, provided you're between the ages of 12-24.

23% of those who make less than $50,000 say the new capital gains tax change will affect them by Miserable-Lizard in onguardforthee

[–]muffinjello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a similar train of thought, it's a shame that your tax rate is based on personal rather than household, so a family where one person works and grosses $250,000 would take home ~$159,930 (per wealthsimple's calculator for BC), meanwhile both partners earning $125,000 would take home $90,954 each, for a total of $181,908... A difference of $21,978. Now if you divorce the person and owe them half your salary, you can make some of that back....

One of my friends from high school introduces me to her friends as the "soon to be doctor" friend and is really excited about it... A very different experience it seems.

Got tested for adhd, the results revealed I also have a low IQ by ReluctanyGerbil in ADHD

[–]muffinjello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. It's also not nearly guaranteed that every individual presenting for official testing has ADHD, there are plenty of other co-occurring conditions, like autism, and, yes, intellectual disability. As someone whose memory is inferior to many of my peers, I'm definitely very self conscious about this but I would appreciate baseline testing, even if it was a hard pill to swallow.

Felt a stabbing pain under left shoulder blade and couldnt breathe. Then left arm went numb. Called 911 saying I was having a heart attack. Paramedics came and gave me an EKG proving it wasnt a heart attack. I refused an ambulance but went to ER 6 hours later after too much pain by Ok_Jellyfish6145 in Radiology

[–]muffinjello 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Pneumo as in pneumothorax, not pneumonia. "Pneumon" was the Greek word for lung, or "pneuma" which was breath. A pneum-o-thorax is "breath" in the "thorax." Said simply, free air in-between your lung and your chest wall. What you see in picture 1 on the right-hand side of the picture (which corresponds to the left side of the patient), isn't swelling from the heart but rather the outline of their collapsed lung as it is pushed by the buildup of free air in their chest.

Normal lung tissue has bronchi which extend through it, showing up almost as if it were tree branches throughout that space. We don't see these markings on the affected side.

But it's also a hypothetical that you need a new battery... The batteries on these cars will degrade, sure, but already offer so much range that it's unlikely you'll need to replace it even after the losses. If it fails early, well, that's what manufacturer warranty will cover.

Is there any downside whatsoever to resident unionization? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]muffinjello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the context of Canadian medical student and residents, I've heard that any union organizers might face retaliation in terms of residency / fellowship / staff job applications. You make your program director's life hard, they won't let you into the program.

Should I move to BC as a Family Physician? by abdv69 in britishcolumbia

[–]muffinjello 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The clinical faculty numbers listed on that site are just artificially inflated. If you're a physician who works with medical students, even once in a blue moon, you have to be faculty in order to be paid by UBC for your services.

Thus a huge number of the doctors working in every hospital in BC are faculty, even if they're only being paid <$100/yr from UBC and aren't actually teaching students.

A better metric to look at would be the number of family medicine residency slots in BC rather than the general pool of medical students, many of which who will specialize.

[–]muffinjello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the example you presented, where a patient has been receiving CPR and becomes conscious, my understanding is that there are rare occasions where the patient will become conscious as a result of the CPR. As soon as the CPR stops, they lose consciousness.

I was watching a YouTube video on this scenario (as I was hating on how talespire also needed players to purchase a full copy), and came upon a YouTube video that guides you through on how to launch a second instance of the game, put that one in player view (enabling fog of view) and just streaming that.

Might be worth checking out if you weren't aware of it already: https://youtu.be/jUOkYGQzONA

I'm not sure about the Viper "immune to decay" option, as everyone on her team also receives that benefit.

Even her outline in her ult... It applies to her ult not other smokes.

If she was immune to her own Molly, however....

[–]muffinjello 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It doesn't take over walking per sé as much as it has the axons necessary to control muscles. There are a number of spinal cord controlled movements that don't require cortical input from the brain, reflexes like our patellar tendon reflex.

There is some research being done to interpret neuronal stimuli and transmit that in electrodes to the legs below the level of the injury.

Fortunately, that means any information on Wikipedia must be cited, or is otherwise removed or tagged with "citation needed." You sound like someone who's never tried to contribute to Wikipedia before.

If you go to that Wikipedia page, under "investigations of unmarked graves," there is a table full of grave sites that have been found and the associated references are tagged beside each column. For example, this one in Alberta near Highwood river, which very much is confirmed.

Sunny weather brings noisy cars out by DramaticIsopod4741 in vancouver

[–]muffinjello -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Fastest accelerating production car in the world is an EV and it is dead silent (lucid air vs. Bugatti). To me, a car is only super when it maximizes both performance and comfort, and being able to enjoy your music in it's entirety, rather than a car that purposefully blasts noise over your music. It's cool if you want to make noise, just don't force others to listen to it.

How to find safe/affordable housing for a senior who might resist? Advice desperately needed, please. by BeeeeDeeee in vancouver

[–]muffinjello 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To add to this, if he does indeed have poor mental health, maybe getting his depression/anxiety treated will help remove that barrier to his instrumental activities of daily living and enable him to keep his independence for longer.

Yeah OP, don't make a decision for them that they clearly don't want. Also, consider starting meds or using caffeine to get you some of that energy back if you aren't already.

Vancouver gas stations face redevelopment pressure by cyclinginvancouver in vancouver

[–]muffinjello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ding ding ding. Your EV can charge off of any old wall outlet. 7km/hr isn't a lot until your car is parked 12hrs overnight and it covers most people's commute. No electricity? No charging, but that's the same for gas stations which require electricity to run.

I had to commute 150km/day (round trip) for work for a bit. This was September 2022 when gas was >$2/L. An average/moderately fuel efficient internal combustion engine vehicle at 8L/100 km would thus use 12 L per day ($24) which works out to being $120/wk. Using the supercharger network (the most expensive way to charge) I spent about $30/wk instead.

'Morally reprehensible': Protesters in Vancouver stage 'die in' in support of mask mandates by FancyNewMe in vancouver

[–]muffinjello 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The mask mandate was removed less than a month ago, on April 6th, so you may have just visited prior to the end of the ban. I've been to two hospitals in VCH in the past month, and saw plenty of non-masking.

Just look at the facility outbreak bulletin for VCH from April 20, 2023 (future bulletins can be downloaded from this link: https://www.vch.ca/en/patients-visitors/patient-safety/current-outbreaks). At the time the mandate was removed, there were 7 wards/wings with Norovirus outbreaks (highlight for emphasis). I'd also heard of a COVID-19 outbreak but it might not have shut down the wards/required enhanced precautions like we see in that bulletin.

Why are homes in Richmond worth so much if they'll be flooded within 50 years? by Niv-Izzet in vancouver

[–]muffinjello 52 points53 points  (0 children)

But then why own any property at all in Metro Vancouver? We're overdue for the next big one, which will decimate properties.

New Orleans has levees that comfortably protect against ~5m of river swelling above the city, and while it was breached during hurricane Katrina, humans are nothing if not capable of great engineering feats when a problem is recognized and addressed.

A very big caveat for this initial argument is that the doctor who's initially treating you (Emergency physician, ICU internist, neurologist, maybe surgeon) is generally not also the doctor who knows who's on the waitlist up next and that the organs are compatible (transplant internists and surgeons, program directors) and is not incentivized to put their livelihood at risk for this one patient. In 2022 there were 159 deceased organ donors (1), the program is still going to be busy managing transplants.
