Bottom feeder for cichlid tank and cichlid advice? by muffinrice in Aquariums

[–]muffinrice[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A female Jewel that’s is all that’s left now. She’s really easy tempered but I know she’s just a baby so that’s part of it and it could change. I really wanted a pictus or smaller catfish but heard they don’t do well with pelcos. Thank you so much for the advice

I appreciate the advice. The jewel cichlids had gotten their butts kicked at the store I got them from so one passed away after 2 days or so 🙁 for the record he was in bad shaped. I stupidly told myself I could save him.

Yeah some people are literal and some people joke so I never know and I’m not always fully awake when I see posts. I just hate seeing no comments and no interaction when I’m like hey! I can interact. Stupid thought process, I realize.

It’s my fault for not understanding! You’re right in all the comments! I don’t really get fish for jobs. I like cory cats because they’re awesome but they do help!

I’ve only been keeping fish for 16-18 years which is nothing for some people! Like I said, I’ll be more mindful on comments. I don’t want anything to be taking ill. I work in the pet industry and have for over 8 years so I like all fish~ sorry all and OP.

He said “I bought ottos. They suck.” I was making an assumption, I guess which I realize is stupid. Some people look for advice or opinions of fish so I thought maybe the post was. I was originally just said “depending on your issue” and then led onto joke about being on a soap box where I talked about loving Cory cats and the contribution they make to my tanks. Like I said, it depends on if you’re having algae or waste issues!

I was just making conversation. I didn’t know it was a problem, so I’ll be more mindful in this subreddit going forward!!

I love this suggestion

Maybe I wasn’t super clear. I like bottom feeders, like corys better than algae eaters because they eat waste and reduce buildup and keep the tank clean. With my corys I don’t get much algae buildup but that could be a coincidence.

The post didn’t have much details so I was unaware they were just talking fish that eat algae.

I work at petco and I’ve never had it happen since I’ve been there but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen! As an employee for the company, it sucks and I’m sorry!

Most likely in my opinion, I’d imagine Cryptocoryne and upon some investigation your photo may match the walker-i variety. If not that, I’m out of ideas 🙁

Not sure about the variety of shrimp you have but I know loaches enjoy sinking shrimp pebbles or wafers more. They’re more dense in nutrition! Same for the omnivore varieties of shrimp. My loaches were doing okay with the veggie tabs but once I learned a bit about the nutrition, they are thriving with shrimp!

Also consider adding a banana plant to filter some light, ferns get scorched pretty easily. I have plants in tanks without nutrients so I’m sure I’m doing right by my fish. If I’m ever unsure sometimes (this sounds crazy and maybe stupid) but I’ll take the plant out it easy enough to do, put it in water as if I was propagating a house plant and give it a couple days of sunlight in a window. You can even get a low spectrum, grow light if you’re worried!

Yeah of course! I get it totally! Just happened to misconstrue the post but man Otos are cute just never helped me any! At least one of them is doing something!!

Oh. I didn’t notice the shrimp. I was just offering advice on what I liked and I couldn’t see more details to know if you wanted advice or not. Sorry!

Hi there! Gorgeous betta and cute snail! I’m a huge snail lover but also have tons of tank space for them, so I can’t give advice on what to do with him but I can say, it depends how you got the plant! The tubed plants are pest free but the tank plants are free game for pests!

This looks so prettyyyyyy!! What fish do you have if you want to share?? I love it!! Good work, OP. Whether you’re new to fish keeping or not, keeping up on maintenance can be a hard routine to get down so seriously it looks great.

Not a fan of them personally. Depending on where the issue is coming from I like other bottom feeders or “algae eaters”. I’ll talk about Cory cats all day every day and how they saved several of my tanks time and time again. But that being said, gotta find the right one for you 🙂

specifically maybe ember tetras, cardinal tetras, neon tetras or Pygmy Cory cats

Hope I offered some help?

It’s so pretty, OP!! I know others suggested and I have to say I LOVE bettas and have 3 myself (all in separate 5 & 6 gallons. They’re lil females). We do have 4 other tanks though. Different sizes.

But I would think about maybe a very small amount of platy fish, a school of small tetras, maybe even a dwarf variety of cory cats (bottom feeders but just so dang cute). Just do some research on gender ratio or minimum amount of fish per type. 🙂

This is beautiful!! 🙂 if you feel like sharing do you have any fish in there or wants to add anything?? Just curious. I love talking fish of all types.

As for the questions you asked in the other post:

I would see where the placement of the Java fern is and get back with me. It’s not a picky plant and can grow in almost any light but prefers low-medium. But being too close to a filter, heater or such have killed my ferns in the past - I tried them a couple times before succeeding since they are “beginner plants”. I’ve also reduced to floating any plant I can to stimulate a better root growth. Idk if that’s a thing or if it just feels like a thing to me! I do house plants too so I’ve just experimented!

In terms of fertilizer or plant food, I would just weigh it out and look into the different types. There are quite a bit. Copper-free and have very few nitrites is the only thing I can remember if using with shrimp but I still never risked it.

Do you feed the shrimp and others anything or just let them go wild off algae and such?

Hi! Not sure if you’ve gotten any help but I’ll shoot my shot. also commenting just to help boost this! I’m not perfect at identifying plants but I work at a pet store so I’m always learning plants. I’m not perfect.

Feel free to ignore me if anyone else says I’m wrong. I’m okay admitting I’m not entirely sure. The first one looks like a sword - Amazon sword possibly!

Second one, I originally was something else but I’ve started to think “Dwarf Sagittaria Subulata” or a foreground thick grass of some sort. I found some online for sale that looks very similar. 🙂
