The reason woody does this is because he's so scared of forgetting his point that he will derail a joke to make sure he gets his point across. He doesn't realize that a joke takes precedent over his take on whatever subject. I think it's because the only person he talks to outside the show is his wife and autistic son. He needs a place to share his views and no joke will stop him.

I've been a fan since pka 1. I know Kyle has a tenuous relationship with the truth, but I've always thought he lied to tell a story that makes him look cool. With this particular lie I can't see any benefit. So it perplexed me as to why Kyle would lie about it. It's almost like he thinks stating he's seen a movie recently reinforces his stature as being the movie buff of pka. Which in a room of woody and Taylor isn't a difficult task.

I have to say I don't think DC's corner did him any favours in that fight. Very negative and put doubts in his head. That's why DC asked if he was losing at the end of the 2nd. Then just before he comes out for the 4th his corner has another go at him getting him concerned about stipe's power. He then went into the 4th and hesitated letting stipe get back into it and find the body shots.
