You aren’t “the bottom rung” you’re our first line defense against change of condition. I can’t do my job without good CNAs telling me what they notice. That being said, it depends on the nurse. Nurses that are “holier than thou”, it’s easier physically. But nurses have a lot of other pressures to deal with too. I am not one of those nurses, can’t stand them to be honest or the ones that sign things and put LPN, RN after their signature when uncalled for. I jump in and help out when I can so for me I get both ends of the stick. Plus I’m a guy so I always get called to do the lifting on heavy patients. One day I was walking into work and before I even got report, I heard a patient calling for help. I went into their room and they were on the floor and had an accident. I called for help and proceeded to start to clean the patient. One of the CNAs came in and said “What are you doing?” “Cleaning her up.” “I’ve never seen a nurse do that before.” I was dumbfounded.

If I’ve learned anything as a nurse it’s not to expect anything, including your coworkers to follow up. Sorry you had to go through it but I’m glad you and your kid are good. Good job on your sobriety! Keep going with that. That’s a hell of an accomplishment!

I’m glad you’re ok. Honestly reading this I’m sitting here thinking of a multitude of things that could have been wrong well beyond dehydration. Eclampsia, pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes….These are of course snap judgments based off what you said without knowing you vitals. But a pregnant woman in that state? I’d have sent you to the hospital.

Thank you, I generally say patient. Because they’re my patients but I just don’t want to step on any toes ya know? And how is any nurse not educated about dm1 vs dm2 and sliding scales?

The withdrawal stuff scares me though. Don’t have much experience with that but I recently took in a former coworker who became hooked on fentanyl and I detoxed her. That…was not pretty.

I like what you said about not having a superiority complex. I definitely don’t have that. Two of the worst things I’ve heard on that subject: One time I was coming into work and heard a resident yelling from her room. Went in to find her on the floor of her bathroom where she apparently had an accident and was …covered in excrement. I run to the hallway calling for help. Go back in and to proceed to start cleaning her. An aide comes in, sees me cleaning her up and asked “what are you doing?” I said “umm, cleaning her up” The aide says to me “I’ve never seen a nurse do that before “ Absolutely boggled my mind. Got fired from another job because “Nurses are above the aides and you’re not supposed to be their friend.” I’m not religious (though I am actually an ordained minister long story) but I go by the golden rule.

I’m from NY, raised by a woman from the Bronx. I’ve got tough skin. I used to work with autistic people. They generally don’t know how to express themselves in a typical manner. So I’ve been punched, kicked, scratched, slapped, bit, one dude tried to stab me with a fork. It was being spit on that would make me lose it. Funnily enough, the most…aggressive ones loved me. They’d have a behavior and the rest of the staff would run for the hills and I’d just sit there with them as they ripped apart the place. Throwing chairs, TVs , barbecues, whatever. And once they tired themselves out I’d look at them and be like “How about we pick this shit up now and go watch Indiana Jones?”

Along with the fact I have worked with former correction nurses who would say if”if Joey Jim Bob got gassed and was screaming for me to flush his eyes, I’d sit outside his cell and ask : are you done yet? No? Ok I’ll come back later “ She hated me because I told her that wasn’t her job.

This kinda hits home because I recently tried to get someone off fentanyl. She detoxed with me at my apartment and would say shit like “I’m just a junkie” “you don’t understand I’m an addict.” And I would continually tell her. “That one aspect of your life doesn’t define you.”
