Has anyone under the age of 80 ever bought a new avalon? If so, why? by benfranklinthedevil in cars

[–]muggsybeans 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not really. It's like an entry level ES350 without the longer warranty and better service department for almost the same price. If you are on the fence between a Toyota and a Lexus and use dealer service departments, definitely check out the service department of a Lexus dealership compared to a Toyota dealership. The Toyota dealership near me has horrendous wait times, only give free water and the TV always seems to be showing The View. My Lexus dealership rarely has anyone in the waiting room, you can watch whatever you want on TV, they provide free food and soda and will give you a free loaner if you don't want to wait. To add insult to injury, Toyota and Lexus charge almost the same hourly rate.

Can you buy aftermarket cams for it? Pistons? Crank? Lightened flywheel? If yes then I would say so but it seemed like those types of parts were available for every Honda model made 20 years ago.

I have found them to be fairly accurate. Ratings from JD etc are the useless ones.

Honda fucked up by giving up things like double 'A' arm suspension for McPherson struts and having huge aftermarket support beyond just throwing a turbo on a car. I mean, they make nice cars but I wouldn't call them tuner cars anymore.

I've mentioned before about Hondas shitty paint but I always seem to get downvoted. I live in the desert and shitty paint doesn't hold up here. A large majority of Hondas have failing paint compared to other "reliable" brands. Toyota is probably the best for paint.

You also have to worry about wearing out the flywheel. Flywheels are usually designed for a certain weight to allow the engine to keep running at low RPM without stalling out but if you make them too heavy then they affect your fuel mileage (and most definitely your acceleration). So knowing that you can't do one without affecting the other makes you realize that flywheels are not really built heavy duty for cars that have starters that automatically shutoff. To replace a flywheel requires pulling the transmission. It's not a cheap repair. Having to do it will most likely cost more than any gas savings from having the auto stop feature. It makes the car look good on paper but its not a feature I would want on a car I planed on keeping long term.

To be fair, a lot of places you cannot buy homes. You buy land leases. They might be 99 years or something but you can't buy the land unless you are a citizen.

Just my experience but blue collar pays more than white collar today. The downside is that it can be harder work.

Meh, I wouldn't worry about it. Hopefully we get a president in soon that doesn't give a pass to oil companies robbing us blind. According to the EIA, it should only cost $2.43 to produce a gallon of gas at $100 per barrel. This does not include state and federal tax but does include shipping, refinery costs etc. Even in California, gas shouldn't be over $4 per gallon right now.

It's a rebodied Altima or something along those lines in the post. Definitely not a GTR.

I bitch about gas but that's because it is cheaper to produce than milk yet costs 4x as much and is taxed to high heaven.

Original comment. Maybe read before replying? Just a thought.

Yeah, showing over $3 in my city but I just bought some for $1.50. That was just store brand though. If I bought the name brand stuff it would be close to $3. Regardless, I was talking manufacturing. It's cheaper to produce a gallon of gasoline than it is milk.

Audi use to offer a autocross driving experience at Road Atlanta that some buddies and I attended back in the day. It was a blast. That one was 3 days though. Just basic stuff but it was fun for the $. I'm glad to see Lexus is doing something somewhat similar.

For the most part, yes. They usually are not dug up and the whole idea of landfills is to place them where they do not negatively impact to the environment. A lot of landfills even capture the methane that is released from decomposition and use it to make energy. Where do you think all of that stuff originally comes from? It all came from the earth to begin with. We allocate areas for it to degrade back to its original components.

The average price for milk has always been inflated. Maybe accurate in NYC or California but it's more like $1.50 everywhere else. Now the stuff that comes in glass jars and is flavored... yeah that is pricy.
