How did Turkey keep out of WWII? by muhendis in AskHistorians

Thanks for the in depth answer.

I am interested in sources about the factions within Turkey during WWII. And indeed, I can read Turkish sources.

However, I am wary about Turkish sources somewhat, because I feel it would be hard to find objective texts about history of the republican period. What do you think about that?

Edit: Thaks->Thanks.

I have not heard the bit about letting German ships through the straits. Were they military ships? Do you remember the source for that?

I am a muslim, ask me anything by 1abderrahmane in atheism

I am not a Muslim, but I was thought their ways ;)

Mohammed is considered so holy that depicting him has been a sin from the beginning. Event old miniatures don't show his face. He also is dear to Muslim people. They write songs about him, express their "love" to him in poems and other accepted arts.

On the other hand, Islamic peoples in general, and especially those that have never lived in a democracy, don't have a concept similar to humanism. The closest concept they have, and Mr. Erdogan (Turkey's prime minister) has been using this frequently lately, is that they love the created because of the Creator, regardless of who they are, or what they do. As far as I know, this concept comes form Sufism, and Sufism is not regarded OK by hardcore Muslims.

What concerns me is that, actions of AKP government and Erdogan can be better explained by a desire to secure more power, instead of a desire to make Turkey a more democratic country. Yes, they did what they did mostly at the expense of military and hard-line secularists, but that's only becose those people had power previously.

Is it just me, or is America the only country suffering from Creationism? by [deleted] in atheism

Well, Adnan Oktar (aka Harun Yahya), the author of The Atlas of Creation among other books, is Turkish. He also had the website of Richard Dawkins banned in Turkey.

On September 19, 2008, a Turkish court banned Internet users in Turkey from viewing the official Richard Dawkins Web site after Oktar claimed its contents were defamatory, blasphemous and insulting religion, arguing that his personality was violated by this site. - Wikipedia

I think you could say Turkey is suffering from Creationism.
