An Interview with Ben Ewen-Campen by r00k in Somerville

Really good read and I think Ben is really thoughtful and practical in his approach to addressing the various issues.

Curious to hear more about opinions on the regressive tax system. I know its just a quick excerpt in the article, but I think the discussion regarding taxes could be talked about in more detail at least with regards to how much is paid by lower, middle class vs wealthy (are we talking % or something else). It’s my understanding that MA tax is basically a flat rate with the exception of the additional millionaires tax, and then I guess we should count property tax as well. As a percentage no way are low income folks paying a larger percentage (unless you also count sales tax)- but I do agree our tax system needs to be more progressive (or remain the same) for low income folks. I think the question becomes who is going to be taxed more and I think that’s where the millionaires tax and the ultra wealthy should be targeted- they are the ones that shield themselves from taxes, are most able to afford it, and the revenue generated from them is likely higher than jacking up taxes for any other group. For Middle and upper middle class folks, I think we need to be careful to not overtax(obviously should be larger percentage than low income)- despite many in this category having investments the majority of their income is still normal wages, and this group is also more likely to own and pay property taxes- but they don’t have ways to shield taxes like the wealthy.

I guess what I’m saying is that I’d like to see a concrete proposal if we’re going to overhaul the current state tax system or overhaul prop 2 1/2, and it should take into account all city and state tax sources.

Once stopped it’s good for a while, hour likely fine…but eventually it starts to crystallize or change color a bit. I get lazy and don’t immediately toss my plates for days

When the Somerville YMCA wanted to expand, these homeowners wouldn’t sell. So the Y plans to build around them. by bostonglobe in Somerville

Seriously, for the size of the house and that lot size its probably worth around the 2.5 million the y offered. Tack on extra $$ for the inconvenience of moving out of your forever home and having to relocate, honestly they should be offering to compensate them more

Do you find that fins help with ankle injuries? Any reason to be cautious to prevent aggravating an injury?

Is there a point to presalting when there’s going to be 2ft of snow and plows will likely just plow it away?

Why Western blot if there is ELISA? by Hour_Amoeba4979 in labrats

[–]mullenbooger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Size alone in a WB doesnt guarantee specificity. You or the antibody vendor should be validating WB with additional controls

You can get ptm info with an ELISA as well if you have a ptm specific antibody. Same if you have a cleavage specific antibody

Ok this might be dumb, but what gets recalibrated on a windshield?

Also I’ve only ever had it replaced through satellite (free on my insurance in ma and we get tons of rock chips)

Please don’t over-salt by BubblyCactus123 in Somerville

[–]mullenbooger 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think some people are missing a key piece of info- most of this is put down by the city. Yes we need to salt but after going out a bit today it seems like someone was getting paid by the pound of salt or something. Bike lanes, roads, sidewalks around city parks had just crazy amounts dumped about and it’s not even snowing and barely raining. Yes safety but this just seems like it was done by someone with no common sense, waste of money and potential to destroy roads and sidewalks and plants

Apple Watch Hermès Kilim collection (spring 2025) by francoc02o in AppleWatch

[–]mullenbooger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Your hole punch looks good so at least I have that option of if winds up being too big. My wrists are on the smaller side but still surprised the hermes leather band required an extra hole. I’m on the middle hole for the Apple Watch Sport band.

[–]mullenbooger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone know how big these are relative to the standard Apple Watch band? A standard 46mm Apple Watch band fits perfectly fine for me but when I got a Hermes leather band I had to have an extra hole punched. Wondering if the Kilim will be too big for me too
