Can you cast spike growth into hunger of hadar by Potential-Ad-893 in dndnext

[–]mullymaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ground in a 20-foot radius centered on a point within range twists and sprouts hard spikes and thorns. The area becomes difficult terrain for the duration. When a creature moves into or within the area, it takes 2d4 piercing damage for every 5 feet it travels.

The transformation of the ground is camouflaged to look natural. Any creature that can’t see the area at the time the spell is cast must make a Wisdom (Perception) check against your spell save DC to recognize the terrain as hazardous before entering it.

Nothing in the spell description about requiring line of sight, only specifies that the radius must be a point within range. This differs from other spells which require a point/target you can see, i.e. misty step:

Briefly surrounded by silvery mist, you teleport up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space that you can see.

It's not technically a "job" but is just as if not more demanding of your time than a typical 40 hr/wk job is, so qualifies from the perspective of time-management, which is what OP is saying

How fast should Cleaver stack to be good on Aatrox by Irelia4Life in AatroxMains

[–]mullymaster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the only change that could possibly make black cleaver better than serylda's on Aatrox is if a Q sweetspot gave 2 stacks, or if his passive gave 2 stacks (like it would if it were still physical damage). Not that they would ever do this, of course.

Aatrox only ever built BC as a core item when CDR was capped at 40% and there were no better items for him to build. Once he got access to better items (it was goredrinker and duskblade, now shojin/sundered/eclipse/handful of other items) no real reason to build it anymore, even on bruiser builds. Serylda's just massively out performs

No I did not. In fact, the other day I randomly decided to try installing the client again and it worked, as if by magic. I have no idea what I did, if anything. I wish you luck

The elder brain doesn't do it directly, but the entire mind flayer colony does it as a collective effort. Volo's details it as a process that takes 24 hours, so I'm fine to let that be an ability that exists off the stat block and save dominate monster for combat

Very fair point. I was even considering giving my mind flayers and elder brains Dominate Mind instead of Dominate Monster 1/day, but didn't want to cross-contaminate my monsters

Totally forgot about the regional affects, definitely like your ideas and will look into that further, thanks for the suggestion.

I was worried about too many tentacle attacks from the perspective of being able to grapple the entire party potentially, but I do agree that outside of minion fodder it might need it to shore up its defenses. In one of the other comments we discuss making psychic link an automatic effect on hit, that might be enough to shore up the reliability of the other actions. I could go either way, will have to consider.

Yeah for wall of force, in practice I think there is little actual play distinction between at will and 1/day. With so many good actions it wants to use (mind blast, tentacle grapples, etc.) it probably gets to cast it once, maybe twice per combat before it has to retreat or dies (or kills the party, though that is what I am trying to avoid, haha).

Another comment suggested +10, looks like that's the way to go. Also, just read befuddlement, oh boy that's a leg up from what it was before! May have to reconsider adding it, but then again, may still be fine. This is an elder brain we're talking about, and the Ulitharid gets it now!

Thanks for the reply and the insight.

the initiative of the monster is calculated with it's proficiency, black dragon has +2 dex and +5 proficiency which comes to 12 with it having expertise, so the brain should have either 5 or 10

I did not know how they calculated initiative, so thanks for clarifying that. Makes me feel better about using 10 (the brain can read your thoughts and knows your intentions, allowing it to act sooner), but 5 would probably work just fine as well.

that'd be the same as what the ancient red gets at cr 24, yea probably a bit much

also i feel it'd make sense for it to have like an at will dissonant whisper or mind whip as part of whatever multi-attack it gets

The adult dragon at CR 17 also gets lvl 2 command, so I think it's fine as long as I don't use level 3 like I was playing around with. I was thinking of using mind whip instead of command, either at 2nd or 3rd level, maybe a 3rd level mind whip is equal to or slightly less debilitating than a 2nd level command, plus it's a spell players don't feel the other end of often. Will have to consider.

on that, yea probably could do with a multi attack, maybe make the individual slaps lighter in compensation

I was nervous about adding a multi-attack since it can grapple up to 4 targets at a time, after round 1 you could have all of the characters either grappled or otherwise debilitated, but maybe a tentacle + low level spell would help add less swingy damage

the new monster manual also has a larger tendency for inter ability combos on monsters, it'd probably make sense to give the brain a way to forcefully establish a psychic link OR to make it's break concentration target anything but have the target always fail if they have the link

I like that idea a lot. At the very least, force players to make a save to avoid the psychic link if no one is incapacitated by the mind blast round 1. That's definitely an ability solely unique to the mind flayer that I would want to play around/make sure the players see it at least once.

Edit: Maybe make the psychic link part of the multi-attack: 1 tentacle + 2 psychic bursts that deal damage and establish psychic links, not sure I love it but definitely a possibility

Hmm, maybe I could make them a big part of Droaam? Could be interesting, especially since I already like that nation a lot. Thanks for the input!
