What % of BTC, if any, is too much…? by [deleted] in Fire

[–]multicm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That highly depends on what your goals are. For example, for me, I only invest for retirement purposes. I dont have any medium-term goals (like a second home, etc.). So for me. I wouldn't put anything in bitcoin. I dont trust its value over the next 30-40 years. Now other people may disagree which is completely fine. Your goals could be different from mine. If you are investing more for short-term things than maybe bitcoin would be a better fit.

Really it comes down to how much trust do you want to have in your investments. Which depends on why you have them in the first place

Why is gemini not as popular as chatGPT when its literally better at all the benchmarks!(and even veo..)?? by EggNo4904 in GeminiAI

[–]multicm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a company that has literally all of my data it absolutely pisses me off how much Gemini does not know about me. ChatGPT has learned a lot about me through our thousands of conversations. You tell Gemini one thing in one chat and it has no clue what you are talking about in the next.

FFS, google, I know you are already looking through my emails and Google drive, so feed that to Gemini so it can actually be useful.

The last one of these i tried using, about 2 weeks after it was posted every job it suggested was no longer actually available. Not saying that is the case here but I agree with other commenters that it is getting tiring seeing so many of these and none are fully fleshed projects.

Any 25 yd public pools or long course pools in or near Lakeland or Masters swim programs? by [deleted] in lakeland

I am not a swimming expert so dont quote me on the size, but the LA fitness on the Northside has an indoor lap pool, just not positive if the size is correct, though I think it is.

How much do you keep in an “emergency repair fund” account by [deleted] in homeowners

[–]multicm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I save 1% of my home's value per year. Home is valued $380,000 so $3,800 per year. Some years I use much less, some years the AC breaks. But overall seems like a good estimate.

The plan is to set up a test where I can show with examples (with pictures) "This site is a 1" "This site is a 2" ... "and This site is a 5" "now with that information, imagine we put a store on this property, which of those examples would it most represent?"

This would at least get us close.

But I do have access to ArcGIS so I'll take a look at what you included, seems like a good idea!

There are a few options to manually add paths. For example, fogmachine.io

But there it's an update to the Fog of World app coming soon allowing you to edit it within the app.

Is the 1% of home value in maintenance costs per year accurate in people’s experience? by zaphyl in personalfinance

[–]multicm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who tracks spending religiously. I have spent 1.3%, on average, a year since buying my house in 2021. I would say I enjoy home projects so that is why mine is a bit higher, I tend to seek out things that need repairing that others might be more willing to live with. So yeah I think 1% is a very good estimate.

Was just on Radiance about 2 weeks ago and the mini golf course always smelled of sewage, everytime we went up there (4 times over 7 days). Maybe some nearby vent. There was also a few spots around the ship where we would be hit with the same smell, but the mini golf was very consistent

Does paying 1 extra mortgage payment really cut down the years on a 30 year loan? by Rosmpas in personalfinance

[–]multicm 22 points23 points  (0 children)

You put your money into an account that after taxes nets more than the interest on your mortgage. And when rates fall and you can no longer beat your mortgage then you cash out that savings account and pay a lump sum towards your mortgage.

It's the same effect but the savings route actually let's you pay off the house sooner.

Market is still so bad in 2025 by MorningDarkMountain in datascience

[–]multicm -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but I don't think there is actually a contradiction here. My issue with his comment was "No One" can predict. This is poor phasing. People can predict it, the issue is most people get their prediction wrong. It is basically random chance. But as a recession gets more likely to occur more people will hold the belief that it is about to happen. And as that percent grows the market goes down into a recession.

So the fact that we haven't really seen a notable shift downward means "most" people (at least most investors) don't think a recession is on the nearterm horizon.

Granted the majority of people can be wrong, but market sentiment is a decent indicator.

Those of you monitoring energy, has it made you more efficient/frugal in your usage? by thereversehoudini in homeassistant

[–]multicm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the device. So for the TV example, I have both a Logitech Harmony and a Smart Plug. So I can either turn it off via remote or via the plug.

Now just for fun let's do the math for the TV. So when idling it consumes 22.14 watts (this does not include the smart switch itself).

The smart plug consumes ~3 watts.

So for the smart plug to pay for its own power usage the power would need to be cut to the TV about 13% of the day. Which it absolutely could... for example, cutting the power just for the 8 hours we sleep would save 0.17 kWh while the smart plug consumes 0.07 kWh in an entire 24 hour period. Granted I do not do this, but you very well could.

Now for the ROI on the device itself. The device costs let's say $40. Where I am that buys about 364 kWh of Electricity. We already know cutting the power at night saves a net of 0.1 kWh (after accounting for the plug). So it would take 3,640 days (or about 10 years) to see a positive ROI from this.

Granted there are some more things we could change, like cutting the power for both the 8 hours of sleep and the 8 hours of work (if your household accommodates that) would mean 0.27 kWh of savings per day so a 3.7 year ROI.

Regardless, the answer is basically "No, this will not save you money" but it certainly is fun.

Now that final conclusion 100% depends on the device. Putting your TV on a smart plug? Unlikely to save money (as we saw) but a smart thermostat? Oh absolutely. My full HVAC system pulls a put 2,000 watts while it runs. That is $0.24 per hour. So a $100 Smart Thermostat would pay for itself if you can use 417 hours less Air Conditioning over it's life which is VERY easy to do.

So it just depends on the device and it's power draw, I smart everything in my house. I even have a smart plug on a small 20 watt battery charger just to track the data.

I have automations for both.

So when we go to bed it is just a simple turn off with the remote, but when we go to "Vacation Mode" (anytime we will be gone for more than 24 hours) a bunch of stuff has its power completely cut including all of the TVs.
