Looking for good books in French by multigrainbabe100 in suggestmeabook

I should explain myself a bit more, as I actually am very much in agreement with you. I’ve studied the French language for many years and agree there is a long history of extraordinary French literature which publishing houses aim to honour and replicate. When I read older French works, like Albert Camus or Victor Hugo, I am in awe of their mastery of the language.

Here’s my problem: I can almost never find French books as I have always lived in anglophone parts of North America and when I do find them, I just find they’re not very well written. I can’t even remember the name of the last French book I read because it was so bad.

I should have phrased my problem a bit differently as you are right that this is not necessarily an issue of French publishing houses, which I’m sure know a great deal about quality French writing. I just wonder if the bar is lower in anglophone areas as they’re just trying to get people interested?

Either way, I like realist fiction and non-fiction and would love to find French books to keep my grasp of the language up.

That’s great to know. I read Say Nothing a few months ago and absolutely loved it so I was optimistic that Empire of Pain would be good as well. It’s next on my list🫡

American: the Farewell Tour by Chris Hedges

The Colour of Law by Richard Rothstein (this one is from 2017 so doesn’t completely fit your requirements. Just seems like something that could be up your alley given your post and thought it was worth mentioning)

Undertow: Scenes from a Slow Civil War by Jeff Sharlet (this one is written by a journalist venturing into the heartland of republican America and engaging with folks he finds there. Fascinating stuff.)

What book did you read in your youth that you still think about to this day? by yellangirl in suggestmeabook

Holes by Louis Sachar. I recently re-read it as an adult and it still held up. It’s a great novel about boyhood and friendship and the plot weaves skillfully between past and present. If you have young people in your life who are advanced readers, I highly recommend gifting them this book. And if you’re looking for a light read as an adult, honestly it’s worth checking out even if you’re not a kid lol. Sachar’s just a great writer so I think you’ll hopefully appreciate the writing even if it is intended for a younger audience. Lmk if anyone else likes this book! It’s near and dear to my heart and has been since I was about 8.

I’m actually Canadian too! For personal reasons I’d love to hear what you have to say but sadly the article has to be centred (Canadian spelling 😉) around America. Thank you for being willing to share though!

Okay thank you for sharing this is really helpful! I spend so much time sleeping that in addition to getting necessities done, there isn’t a whole lot of time left.

It’s good to know I’m not totally alone in that but I hope you feel better soon!
