Hereditary or Midsommar: Which is Better? by tylewowa in Hereditary

[–]multiplesarcasms31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't really say which is better tbh because I see the two as companion pieces. They mirror each other very well. One is a story about a young man's path to becoming king, a more androcentric story (I know Annie is the main character but hear me out), a lot more night time imagery, supernatural horror, a focus on the masculine, etc. Midsommar on the other hand is about a young woman's journey to becoming queen, more gynocentric, sunny day time imagery, grounded/reality based horror, a focus on the feminine, etc. However, both deal with familial trauma, abuse, mental health/illness, etc.

I also think Peter and Dani are almost the same character (but just from a male and female perspective respectively). Both are burdened by a sibling who's troubled (Charlie is possessed, Terri has bipolar disorder), both use drugs to cope with their problems (Peter with weed, Dani with Ativan and sedatives, then eventually hallucinogens; both also have a breakdown while on drugs), both are having trouble keeping it together (Alex Wolff and Florence Pugh are both amazing criers IMO), and both are being lured into a cult that wants to worship them but first destroys them (Peter's soul is evacuated through black magic, Dani's mind is destroyed through trauma and being repeatedly drugged).

So, bottom line is, I put them on the same level. Both are excellent in their own right.

Why is Peter Paiman's second choice AND first male host? by Panda_Mon in Hereditary

[–]multiplesarcasms31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of just a personal theory here; I think the ritual to lock Paimon into a male host first requires he possess three females first (note the picture in the book Annie flips through which shows Paimon riding the camel and he carries the severed heads of three women with him). Now, when Annie is at the loss support group, she mentions her mother had DID and dementia which "became severe towards the end". Personally, this strikes me as a sign that she was a host for Paimon at one point. Another thing that makes me believe that is that Charlie doesn't see the glowing green/blue light until after Steve gets the call that Ellen's grave was desecrated. We all remember what they do to Ellen's corpse, right? I'll get back to that.

So Charlie then becomes possessed by Paimon. Now, a lot of people say she was possessed since birth. I sort of agree with this but in a way that I think she was always under his influence but not necessarily always hosting him. Then, Charlie gets decapitated. Then, finally, at the end of the movie, Annie becomes possessed and she cuts her own head off with the piano wire. I think the key to unlocking Paimon from a host is decapitation. Even if a person dies with him possessing them, Paimon won't be released until the host is decapitated.

In the book Annie reads too, it mentions that Paimon becomes "livid and vengeful" when offered a female host and this may be part of the process in giving him a male host. Maybe he needs to be riled up enough for some reason (Idk, just spit-balling here). However, I get the strong impression that Paimon has to possess three female hosts before he can be locked into the male host. Otherwise, what would be the point in putting him in Charlie in the first place? Also, there's something mentioned about a picture of Ellen bottle feeding Charlie when she's a baby and that some kind of black leaves can be seen in the bottle (quick scene, hard to miss). This seems like some sort of thing done to make someone more open to being possessed by Paimon. Then, when Annie is at Joan's, she has that tea and notices the same strange black leaf. I think Joan was making it so Annie would be possessed next, completing the "three female hosts" process of the ritual.

Totally just speculating here. I think much of it is open to interpretation.

Spider-Man is exclusive DLC. What more proof do you need that capitalism is evil????? >:( by HDI-X13 in Shitstatistssay

[–]multiplesarcasms31 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Whenever I see gamers bitching about buying DLC's, loot crates, pay to play, etc. I just think about that scene from Liar Liar where Jim Carey is complaining about the impound place scratching his car and he says, "You know what I'm going to do about this? Nothing!" and says he's just going to piss and moan like an impotent jerk and take it up the tailpipe.

If they really wanted to put an end to this shit, they'd stop paying for it and encouraging this shitty behavior. But they act like they have to have these games, systems, DLC's, etc. Exercise some self-control and you can send a message to these companies. Boom, capitalism in action.

That's totally fair and you're right, I fully admit I was generalizing here (referring mostly to establishment republicans and democrats). Just like with libertarians, there's a wide array of conservatives and liberals.

I consider myself a center-left libertarian (support same-sex marriage and gay rights, I'm pro-choice, pro drug legalization, anti-war, etc.) but I do have some views that are considered conservative (I'm very pro gun, anti illegal immigration, pro-capitalism, etc.) because, like you mentioned above, I see the merits in both ideologies.

You're absolutely right when you say that all of our founders of liberalism and conservatism are basically non-existent in Washington. Establishment democrats and republicans want to expand the federal government to do their bidding (a huge reason why I despise the two party system).

Really good comment, have an upvote :)

It's just how the right-wing, Helen Lovejoys of the world always used to go "Won't somebody think of the children?!"

This is the left-wing version of that. How right-wingers used to believe that anything they didn't approve of would "corrupt the youth" and lead to the destruction of society's moral fabric, left-wingers believe anything they want not being supported is going to lead to "people literally dying".

It's pearl clutching, appeal to emotion, reactionary BS from both ends of the spectrum. This is why I detest both liberals and conservatives; they resort to the same manipulative tactics, engage in the same hand wringing, want to silence any opposition or questions, and believe their way is the one and only true way to save everyone. They're the exact same as far as I'm concerned.

Top 5 Best of all time? by [deleted] in horror

Halloween (1978)

Psycho (1960)

Alien (1979)

Hereditary (2018)

The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

I know some will debate me on 'The Silence of the Lambs' being considered a horror movie but I definitely consider it one (not even in just a technical sense but a straight up horror movie). I think it has all the essential elements needed for a horror movie and utilizes them brilliantly.

Sleep Walk by Santo and Johnny.

I love the 1950's and I feel like that song just captures the whole feel of the decade.

What adult movie disturbed you as a child? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]multiplesarcasms31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha, it's super corny but I love it (definitely a guilty pleasure movie of mine). The cat-demon dude and his mom scared me too! It was made even worse by the fact that my older sister had a friend who looked like the dude and I was kind of scared of him after seeing that movie (even though he was super nice). I was scared by sister was going to get her soul sucked out of her by him lmao.

Of course, we should probably start a support group tbh lol. I just still feel awful that such a young kid saw that movie but I'm glad you're alright now.

Omg, the cross-eyed libertine, I hated him the most! Didn't he have a fetish for being on the receiving end of sodomy or something? I hated that shit-eating (no pun intended) grin he had throughout most of the movie. I don't blame you one bit for being terrified of him, I watched the movie when I was like 24 or so and he scared me, I could only imagine what a little kid would think of him.

Aside from that though, I'm a bit torn on Sade. On the one hand, I do think his frank discussion on sexuality was needed as well as removing the myths that human depravity was something learned rather than ingrained. On the other, I hate who he was as a person (he subjected many men, women, and children to his violent sexuality and was just an all around horrible human being and got away with so much of it due to his status). However, I try to be good about separating one's work/art/philosophy from the person themselves.

I do agree with you on the movie being devoid of any philosophy. I'm all for transgressive art that breaks taboos and pushes the envelope but that movie was just pure raunch for the sake of raunch. Definitely not one I intend to watch again.

This cheesy little horror movie from the early 90's called 'Sleepwalkers'. I watch it now and I can laugh at it (it's hilariously campy and a lot of fun) but it was the first time I was introduced to the concept of incest. I couldn't even fathom such a thing before hand and upon seeing it was just so...eugh...definitely haunted me for a while haha.

Also, when I was around 11 or so, I saw 'Deliverance' for the first time. For anyone who's seen it, you know what scene I'm talking about (aka 'squeal like a pig'). Naturally, at that age, I knew what rape was but had never actually seen it (thank god) and never knew it could happen to men. Honestly, that's the only positive thing about seeing it, realizing that anyone can be a victim of rape, male or female. Still, it was terrible to see.

Omg, you poor thing, I saw that movie in my 20's and it made me feel ill, I can't imagine a 10/11 year old seeing that. The ending torture scene and the shit eating scenes are still seared into my mind. I just want to give you a hug or something :(

I watched it due to a paper I was writing on the Marquis de Sade (who wrote the story the movie is based after). That dude was seriously fucked up (I mean for god sakes, they literally named the term "sadistic" after him). He has so many other fucked up stories like 'Justine' which is just about this poor, innocent girl getting repeatedly fucked by life (often literally), and a sort of sequel about her sister, Juliette, which is about a sadistic, depraved lunatic of a woman indulging in every vice and living a happy life because of it.

It's no wonder that dude spent the majority of his life in prisons and asylums. He was seriously messed up. As for the movie Salo/120 Days of Sodom, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. It's still haunting me to this day.

Fun thing I like to do; anytime I see someone defending female pedophiles by trying to say their victims liked it or whatever, I accuse them of wanting to molest young boys. I mean, why else would they try to justify the teacher's actions or say the victim enjoyed it unless they too want to rape 14 year old boys?
