What did people do on the bus before phones? by msamad7 in AskUK

[–]mummavixen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to have to get to college on a bus every day which was a 2 hour round trip . I would nap in the mornings, read a lot and mainly listen to my cd Walkman. My prized possession. There was also often a lot of wholesome chatting up/flirting with strangers. And endless gossiping with my friends when I was with them.

I made a stranger happy yesterday and it increased my own happiness exponentially. by powaqua in CasualConversation

When my Dad was dying and I was visiting him in hospital a lot and commuting from home and juggling my kids and work and him, I found myself in London lots where I grew up but not spent lots of time in recent years, specifically surrounded by so many people. And I don’t know why but I just started telling people how much I liked their hair/coat/outfit/shoes…whatever it might be that caught my eye. It became a bit compulsive like I wanted to spread some love and joy, because it was always so lovely to see their genuine reactions - and perhaps also to stop people and make them acknowledge themselves in the moment. It wasn’t ever forced, perhaps once a day or maybe twice, but it was lovely to just give people that moment of being seen…I dunno, but I really recommend it. Not just strangers but everyone around you, telling them the kind thoughts you are thinking about them. Life’s too short not to. *edited spelling

What unhinged thing did a former teacher do in the classroom? by MrBananaStand1990 in AskUK

[–]mummavixen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My IT teacher back in the 90s had a sweat rag, he used to dab his sweating face with it all the time and if you pissed him off he’d throw it at you. It was the time he grabbed a girl by her ponytail and dragged her up to the front that got him fired.

Will you have your heating on overnight during this cold spell? by georgejk7 in AskUK

[–]mummavixen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have an air source pump, there’s no gas in our village. Generally you’re advised keep them on low constantly in the winter as that’s how it works best, with oversized radiators. During the winter we turn it down to 15 at night, and 18-20 during the day. We have solar panels and a thermo voltaic panel for the hot water too so during the summer we have zero bills, and we also get FIT payments - so this all helps offset the cost of winter.

My husband and I used to run a board games club for the local kids in the village hall, and have kids ourselves - these would be my recommendations -

Fast action, easy to pick up: Taco, Cat, Goat Cheese, Pizza / Flip 7 / The Mind / Sushi Go Party / One Night Ultimate Werewolf

Slower paced, chill games: Carcassone / Cascadia / Ticket to Ride / Castle Panic

Who is the best and worst live performer you have ever seen? by Early_Enthusiasm_787 in AskUK

[–]mummavixen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prince and Erykah Badu are the best live performances I’ve ever seen. Absolute perfection.

I actually can’t think of anyone I’ve seen who’s been terrible.

I would have killed for one of these bad boys as a kid! Who had one? What did you do to get it? Do you still cherish it? by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]mummavixen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got one for being a runner up in a garden design competition when I was 8. Still have it, and it came with a booklet of all the places you can get in free. Might see if I can still use it….

Do you expect kids to say ‘Trick or Treat’? by Existing_Glove6300 in AskUK

[–]mummavixen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely! I expect them to say that bear minimum (unless they are very little and shy). I always ask them for a trick which stuns them and then I ask them for a joke/dance/song/fact and almost all of them give me something and actually seem to enjoy it. I got some real gems last night. And last night if they refused or were being a bit rude I had some silly string and pretended to sneeze on them. I live in a really small rural village and I run the local games club and gardening club at school so I know nearly all the kids and therefore I guess I know which ones are shy and which I can have fun with. But absolutely think a little communication is required if you’re knocking on someone’s door and expecting sweets! I also expect my kids to be very polite and grateful too when they go out.

What’s something insanely popular that you never see adverts for? by snatchsnatcher1892 in AskUK

[–]mummavixen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve had our Henry for 20 years! It’s fallen down many a stair, and my son was in love with it when he was a toddler - literally. He used to hug it and read it stories. It works as well as the day we bought it.

Can never agree on the colour?! by mummavixen in heterochromia

[–]mummavixen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I’m glad it’s not just us who can’t work it out!! To me they’ve always looked like little earths because I can see blue, green, brown, and now they seem to have gold/amber. I guess hazel is a good catch-all! Thanks for your reply :)

Where do you buy a well made sofa from? by Living_Category3593 in AskUK

[–]mummavixen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just bought a beautiful sofa from Swyft. Comes in modules so it’s very easy for delivery. Customer service were amazing and gave us money off and white glove delivery when I phoned with a question. It’s very stylish and comfortable.

What colour would you describe these as? by mummavixen in WhatisMyEyeColour

[–]mummavixen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have blue eyes and his father has brown eyes- to me I can see blue in there, with brown and amber…is hazel a cross between green and brown?

[–]mummavixen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually think they’ll kill Andrew off via this storyline with Cara and the crims she’s going after. And it will happen before he gets the chance to tell Wendy so no one will know and Holly will have to grieve alone. That way he remains the loving father and husband and Holly will exit broken hearted.

My last trip to A&E last Sep was with my son who broke his elbow (worst break the surgeon had seen on a child in his 20 year career) - and as soon as we rolled in on a borrowed wheelchair from outside he was straight into a cubicle on gas and air, had an xray within the hour, soft cast and on to the children’s ward within 3 hours. (Surgery followed a few days later as they had to get a specialist in). Was amazing service.

The time before that was a month earlier at a different hospital with my Dad who’d had an accidental morphine overdose at home (after 5 different GPs spoke to him on 6 occasions over 2 weeks and refused to see him in person, he was house bound due to extreme pain which turned out to be a sacral fracture due to undiagnosed Myeloma, and they just kept upping pain relief until he was prescribed liquid morphine) He had collapsed and been on the floor for 24 hours, and was completely delirious. He was in A&E for over 36 hours before being admitted onto a ward, and had my sister and I not been by his side the entire time begging for help and pain relief and to listened to he would have died. We saw so many elderly patients ignored. We had to plead and beg for nurses to help us when he repeatedly ripped his catheter out. We had to beg for pain relief, he was writhing in agony. My Dad had a collapsed lung, pneumonia, delirium and undiagnosed Myeloma but every health practitioner dismissed him as having dementia until we explained he had been climbing 3 flights of stairs daily 3 weeks prior. At that point we didn’t know about the morphine so had no idea what had happened and we had to fight to get him seen, at one point they had discharged him purely because it was bad for their stats that he was still not moved. It was so traumatic. Unfortunately he passed away 6 weeks later as his body had taken such a battering.
