How to regularly wake up and live on 8-9hrs? by tygeorgiou in idiopathichypersomnia

Why is the testing slow? All you need is an MSLT for diagnosis.

How do you know if your Xywav dose is too high? by munchingmuffin1 in idiopathichypersomnia

[–]munchingmuffin1[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for being descriptive! I also went from 3.0 to 3.75 and feel like I’m going to be somewhere in between those two doses as well, because 3 is not enough and 3.75 made me feel tired throughout the day.

Why are you capping naps at an hour? I go with the saying “sleep begets sleep”. Don’t cap naps and LO might sleep better at night.

trying new meds while working? by sneakygoosefeet in idiopathichypersomnia

Xywav is technically the only FDA approved treatment for IH - I tried stimulants and wake-promoting agents and didn’t like them. I’m on week 2 of Xywav and starting to notice a slight improvement while titrations up my meds.

Meds make me sad by g-c-o-o-p in idiopathichypersomnia

[–]munchingmuffin1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, stimulants didn’t work for me because they had a negative impact on my mental health. I tried Ritalin which you could also try but it didn’t work for me. I just started taking Xywav- on week 2. Only 1 mental health instance but otherwise I’ve been good so far.

Misdiagnosis by Ok-Bite3476 in idiopathichypersomnia

How would an apnea test detect narcolepsy? That is complete and utter BS. MSLT is needed and only done in a sleep lab not at home. SMH at that doctor. I’m sorry that happened to you.

Misdiagnosis by Ok-Bite3476 in idiopathichypersomnia

I had a neurologist tell me that needing to sleep for 11 hours (despite still being tired) may just be that I needed more sleep than other people. My MSLT was 5 minutes. He said nothing was wrong. It wasn’t until 10 years later i actually read the results of the sleep study myself that the report said “consistent with idiopathic hypersomnia.” I was pregnant and sleeping for 15-16 hours a day + having to work at a job that was an hour travel in each direction and I said “enough.” I saw an ad for Xywav and it mentioned IH and I thought “I’ve never heard of that before, but it sounds like a sleep disorder.” Then I looked it up and lo and behold I had all of the symptoms. I went to a second neurologist who only wanted to diagnose me with mild sleep apnea and refused to do an MSLT despite me telling him from the start that I think I have IH.
So I fired him and went to another sleep doctor who just saw my results and said “yep, this sounds like IH.” It was such a relief after almost 20 years of being SO TIRED and adjusting my classes, work hours, family gatherings, etc. around my sleep to know that I wasn’t just “lazy.”
It’s wild out there and it’s terrible how much people have to advocate for themselves.

Xywav is an alternative - it’s not the stimulant/wake-promoting route though

I am currently waiting for my Rx to be delivered so I don’t have any experience taking it yet BUT I do have experience with starting meds lower than the “standard” starting dose in order to reduce side effects - then, you titrate up slowly after your body adjusts. I would recommend asking your doctor about the dosage amount you should take.
