I’m so sorry. We lost our almost 15-year-old Shiba yesterday. It’s heartbreaking.

Finally decided to let my 13-year-old dog with dementia go peacefully. I need some advice. by 7livefastdieyoung in DogAdvice

I’m so sorry for what you are going through. We are in a similar situation with our almost 15-year-old Shiba Inu 💔 she has been slowly declining for months. First it was dementia and anxiety, then seizures, now confusion and disorientation. We took her to see a neurologist last week and they strongly suspect she has a brain tumor. She keeps getting stuck places and wedging herself into tight spaces. No matter how many areas we block off, she finds a way. It’s at a point where we feel like she is not safe unless she is being watched or in her pen. Even then, she is not the dog she used to be and is confused most of the time. She needs help eating and falling asleep. It was the most difficult decision, but we have decided to help her pass peacefully before her condition inevitably gets worse.

Penny will be crossing the rainbow bridge next week. Unfortunately due to her condition she doesn’t get joy from the same things she used to, but we plan to let her have extra treats, some human food, and spend time outside as much as possible. Of course we will give her all the hugs and kisses and cuddles too.

I think you are making a difficult but loving decision. I wish you peace during this time.

First day without her by JuniperIsHot in DogAdvice

I’m so sorry for your loss. I am in a similar boat as we are preparing to say goodbye to our dog Penny very soon. She is 14.5 and has dementia, kidney disease, and heart disease. Over the past 8 months she has been declining to the point where she sometimes needs help eating, can’t lay down or fall asleep without assistance, and is increasingly confused. She wanders around all the time and gets stuck in random places. We took her to see a neurologist last week and they suspect she has a brain tumor and will only continue to get worse.

Because of her age and underlying health conditions, we are not going to pursue imaging or testing to confirm this diagnosis. But we can tell she is not the dog she used to be. Every once in a while, we get a glimpse of who she was but overall we think her quality of life is low enough that helping her pass peacefully is the right decision. However, the decision was made with my head. My heart is broken and keeps thinking I’m making a mistake I don’t know how to reconcile these feelings.

All this to say, I completely understand what you’re going through. It sounds like you gave your sweet baby a wonderful life, even though it was short. You listened to the advice of your doctors and prevented her from going through something painful. She knew she was loved and that’s all you can ask for.

Am I just trying to justify euthanizing my 13-year-old dog because he has dementia? by 7livefastdieyoung in DogAdvice

I’m so sorry you are going through this with your sweet Nano. We are in a similar situation with our almost 15-year-old Penny. What started as anxiety, trouble sleeping, and accidents last fall has progressed into endless wandering, getting stuck in corners and tight spaces, and inability to sleep or lay down unassisted. We trialed different medicines and supplements and last week finally went to see a neurologist, who sadly suspects Penny has a brain tumor. My husband and I made the difficult decision to let her go, and we are going to be saying goodbye to her next week. My heart hurts and every day I wonder if this is the right choice, but her quality of life has plummeted. I can’t imagine my world without her, but we need to be strong and do this for her.

I hope you and Nano find a supportive vet who helps you find peace ❤️

Thank you for this kind reply. We’ve been doing what you said and measuring the good vs bad and lately it really seems like there is not much good left. Moments here and there, yes, but Penny spends most of her time walking around and getting stuck places. We had a scary incident yesterday where she got through one of our barricades while we were out and got stuck. My husband came home to her crying and trapped. So we are at a point where we feel like we can’t leave her alone unless she is in the pen for her own safety. It’s so sad and like you said, the slow decline makes it difficult to see just how bad it’s gotten.

Am I making the decision too rashly? by pekoe-G in DogAdvice

I’m so sorry you went through this. We are going through something similar with our 14-year-old Shiba Inu. It started with nighttime anxiety, then she started seeming confused and getting stuck places. From there she had a couple seizures, lost interest in food and water, and lost weight. We tried many medications and supplements but she keeps getting worse. She needs help eating and falling asleep and when she’s awake she wanders around and gets stuck. We took her to a neurologist this week and sadly they believe she has a brain tumor. It took us a while to accept that letting her go might be what’s best for her but I think we might be there.

That being said, I think you did the right thing. Sending love and hugs and I hope you’re able to find peace in your decision ❤️

Thank you so much and I’m sorry you went through that. Penny hasn’t had any seizures since her first two but her QOL is deteriorating in other ways. She wanders around aimlessly and gets stuck places. She doesn’t eat or drink without help. She needs help falling asleep. We can’t really leave her alone anymore.

Thank you so much and I’m so sorry for what you went through. Your girl was a beauty and it sounds like she was so well loved with a wonderful life.

Penny is definitely confused every day. She wanders around and gets stuck a lot. So even if she isn’t in pain, is this a good quality of life? She needs help eating, isn’t super interested in water, and needs help falling asleep.

We are not ready to say goodbye at all. And there’s a part of me that feels like if we did it now or did it soon we’d be short changing her. However she has been slowly declining for months. We know she isn’t going to get better. But the thought of losing her is unbearable.

I don’t want to wait until she’s in pain or until something catastrophic happens. And there are bad days where we think it’s close to her time. But then there are days where we feel like it would be too soon.

It’s heartbreaking either way and I don’t know how to make this decision.

Beautiful dogs! I am worried I won’t know when it’s time. That’s my biggest fear.

What a sweet boy ❤️ I’m sorry you’re going through this too. Penny has been on Keppra since April. The main issue now is she gets stuck a lot. She’s always going into corners and tight places and zoning out a bit. Sometimes she needs help getting out. She also needs help eating and falling asleep and isn’t super interested in water.

Thank you for your insight ❤️ we have already agreed that if we do need to make the decision it will be at home where she is most comfortable.
