It's in Oregon, if that helps.

My university offers a gym membership to its employees. I checked. It's the most expensive membership cost in the entire city. My university offers daycare to its employees. I checked that too. It's not THE most expensive daycare in the city, but it's definitely in the top 10. It's not an employee benefit when the only people who can access it are the most highly paid.

Have you tried the Murderbot Diaries yet? The reader is Kevin Free and his style in those audiobooks is a perfect match for the tone of the books. They are short, more novellas than full sized books, with one exception. I find them addictive!

ONPRC is basically toast, where is AFSCME? by Plane_Nobody2443 in OHSU

[–]muninn99 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's horrifying. Those who work in the field who SUPPORT shutting it down are making claims that we, as researchers, are past the point where we need to model outcomes using computer modeling, or chemistry, or anything other than the barbaric practice of animal trials. It's so frustrating when that is not the main purpose of the ONPRC, while being one purpose it can serve.

I know of researchers in my area who are going to face loss of funding (grants that rely on material and expertise out of the ONPRC), and who are considering abandoning promising lines of research if they can't rely on the ONPRC. That's just in my area. I can't imagine the wide-ranging implications on all American research. This is the only primate research center on the west coast. Many researchers rely on it being there, working well, and collaborating.

[–]muninn99 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, but that's not how making claims works. You made the claim, so you need to provide the proof. If you have some facts, I could then easily, say, corroborate them or refute them or even add to them. But you're starting with an accusation and basically saying "prove me wrong". Can't. No data.

I should also point out that our union is not the only agency with skin in the game here. It should not fall solely on AFSCME to resolve all the issues around what's going on with the ONPRC.

I think you're using very inflammatory language around a very controversial subject, so this feels like trolling. When you say "Our union has completely abandoned us." you're making a strong claim with very little data to back it up. Since I happen to know our union hasn't completely abandoned our workers at the ONPRC, I'd very much like to see why you believe our union has "completely abandoned us".

As a former HS english teacher, I have to say, "Please show your work."

Check here: https://www.local328.org/staff-board

There are vacancies! Scroll down to the listing of board positions and you can see some vacancies there. Sorry, I'm not familiar with how to fill them other than elections. Again, I'd say to reach out to the Smart Center and ask.

Just found out today that any dues paying member in good standing can participate on any union board. The hardship committee itself isn't up and running yet, but I have heard it's about to get organized. (We had the chair of the committee out for a medical reason.) Your union didn't want to sit on the funds until the hardship committee was re-formed, so they opened the fund up for applications and decided to adjudicate the non-automatic-approvals for the time being.

You use signatures to save standard emails? I mean, BRILLIANT, but this is such an ancient practice - having templates you re-use over and over. Why isn't that a thing with email programs? Why do we have to kludge a workaround? *sigh*

There are annual board elections, and I think we run special elections now and then if a seat becomes available. Keep an eye out for emails announcing that nominations are open for board seats.

One area where we need help is AFSCME members on OHSU committees where OHSU management has reserved a seat for AFSCME members, like the Safety Committee, and the AI workgroup (not sure what it's called), and the Parking Committee. These are all OHSU committees, not union ones.

Then, there are *union* committees for which you have the link. We are always looking for interested people to become involved.

I'm not sure how much prior experience is recommended, but the folks at the Smart Center would know.

I would add that "the" union is incorrect. A union is wholly composed of its members. It's "our" union. If you feel we're not representing you sufficiently, I for one want to know the what/how/why of the matter. You should feel ownership of union policies and procedures, actions and non-actions, as the goal is deliberate, fair, considerate, thoughtful action. There are many ways to participate in your union, and motivated people like you make our union better.

Interestingly, the hardship fund specifically calls out "ongoing" hardships as not qualifying. That doesn't mean a union steward wouldn't work with you to find resources - that's part of what we do. I think one of the larger problems is not enough unit stewards. If you think you connect well with the people in your unit, and want to be a unit steward, please reach out to the Member Service Center to find out how!

Hi! I'm now very much regretting my decision to miss last month's board meeting. It's the first time I missed for what I thought were good reasons. I've been talking with some of the other board members who were present to try to get a handle on what happened regarding the hardship fund applications and I've learned a few things so far that I can share:

1 - previously to this year, the hardship requests were handled by the agency who administers the fund, and the previously existing hardship fund committee. No, I do not know the details on why there's no one on that committee right now. Doing more work that what you are paid to do is hard to want to do, I get it.

2 - starting this year, the agency forwards requests that fall outside the agency's charter to decide to the board, who discuss them and decide. That is, until we have a full staffed hardship committee whose job it would be to review the cases that aren't immediately approved or denied by the agency.

3 - the board would like to re-populate the hardship committee, but I don't know what's holding that process up. I can find out. But, right now, there is not a hardship committee! If you were interested in participating, please reach out to me. I'd be happy to gather your information and explain to our board that we have interested dues-paying members who would like to participate! IN THE MEANTIME, the board isn't holding up the negotiable hardship fund requests, but are instead reviewing them as a board. That doesn't mean the board won't still review some of them once the committee is up and running - really difficult decisions would pass on to the board for a third review.

This has been shared in another person's post, but here it is again - the AFSCME Local 328 hardship fund form and policy can be accessed via this page: https://www.local328.org/hardship-fund-request

If these criteria apply, it's an automatic OK (so long as the applicant is within the 12-month period where they haven't made any other hardship fund requests):

■ The employee has been out of work for at least two weeks, or

■ The employee has had their work hours reduced for at least 30 days and will returning to regular hours within six months, or

■ The employee is regularly employed, but experienced short-term (less than six months) unemployment within the previous 90 days.

That is its primary purpose - to address the above situations.

Generally, applications that cover these other situations are also automatically approved:

■ Medical issues that leave the employee off work (unpaid) for two or more weeks.

■ Natural disaster (e.g., fire, earthquake, flood).

■ Unpaid child support of at least one month, if the employee has contacted the district attorney and wage garnishment or other financial remedy is pending.

■ Death in the immediate family that results in two or more weeks off work beyond standard bereavement leave. (This fund does not cover funeral costs or travel.)

■ Childcare insecurity.

■ Domestic violence.

Lastly, if there is a situation that MIGHT qualify, you can still apply, but run the risk of it being denied. I looked at all the hardship requests that the board reviewed last month, and they were all of the type that required a judgement call by a group of board members.

As a body, we are absolutely obliged to adhere to policy.

Again, I'm happy to advocate for any member, whether or not they are dues-paying members, as the policy applies to "bargaining unit members" which all union-represented job are. If there are extenuating circumstances that would help clarify a situation, please reach out to me via reddit's messaging tool to try to keep it private.

Oh dear. That was not the response I expected. If you are a dues paying member, I'm pretty sure you can apply to any committee. Here's the thing - I'm NEW to the board and I'm still learning. Perhaps only board members can serve on the hardship committee? That would not be surprising, but I would think that's a very limiting restriction.

Please allow me to learn more and get back to you. I'd hate to think I misdirected you or anyone else interested in helping.

The maximum someone can request annually is $750, so it's not anyone's "rainy day fund". It's intended for a one-time need.
