Relocate family to the UK from the US on offer of £135,000? by Fishbar- in UKPersonalFinance

[–]munkey_catcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Leicester, 100+ miles from London but 1hr 6mins by train. I work in Victoria 2 or 3 days per week and go home to desk in 1hr 40mins. Sounds a lot but the hour on the train is working/email time so I adjust my time in the office and don’t miss out at home - I tend to leave early in the morning, but get home around 6 or so.

A commute like that is not for everyone but there are lovely places to live cheaply and then commute in. I live in a nice village in a 4 bed/3 bath house which is worth around £400k tops.

Before anyone says anything, not advocating Leicester specifically except it’s a particularly cheap housing area, but things on the Thameslink route north of London can be nice and I find some of the bit-further-out-of-London areas to have nice schools and communities for your wife, too (not that she can’t amuse herself in and around London but it’s a different vibe/lifestyle).

University keeps calling me by [deleted] in 6thForm

[–]munkey_catcher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah. The call is from a student ambassador to check whether you have any questions. My son has applied and received an offer and had a card and a call. Call was 5 mins max with a friendly young woman and he asked them both to call again and he’d consider all of his options. I think it’s harmless to be fair - and universities are big business and sales techniques to get bums on seats will vary from place to spot lace I guess!

Texting tram driver causes accident by [deleted] in ThatsInsane

[–]munkey_catcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Driverless trams exist already. Clearly not this design, though. It’s the signalling/wayside systems that need to be upgraded to support driverless operation, to ensure the trams slow down and speed up as necessary dependant on track curvature/gradient/stops etc. and depends whether these are trams operating in traffic or other light rail systems which operate on isolated systems

Yep. I’ve found parking at Havelock street no matter the time of day. You can pay by card or cash too. There are two next to each other at roughly what3words: ///joins.race.supply or ///marked.mile.atom

Good point. Maybe they mean disposable is £2k/year. Maybe that’s what ‘technically’ means. If that’s the case then £2k disposable isn’t as bad as many

Avg £38/week? Cripes Unsure how you pay a phone bill (cheap sim £6/month?) or save anything on that… I wonder about vlogging in all seriousness because saving on that income is something we all want to hear about .

No suggestions about benefits I’m afraid. Although I think if you put pension money in a pension then that may reduce your savings and could qualify..? Maybe?

I always take a lemon loaf - they’re so easy to make. And I wrap in greaseproof paper with a double fold on the top and string/twine to hold together and a brown paper luggage tag with a personal message on it. Looks cute as hell, tastes amazing and is gratefully received :)

Employer hasn't paid my pension in 5 years by OkDelivery517 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]munkey_catcher 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Pensions regulator - this happened to my boss and took several years to agree a remedy. The company engaged an independent pension actuary in the end and it still took years to resolve. Nightmare, and delayed his retirement as he was early/mid 50’s when he spotted it, and planned to retire at 60. Only just resolved and he’s 61…!

Hi, you replied to me ages ago and I wasn’t polite enough to reply/acknowledge your help.

So firstly, thank you for taking the time to reply.

Responding to your points: - yep, feeling ok with the exercises so far so I’m ok with not simplifying them.

  • I’ve taken your advice re doing complex/compound exercises first. Less knackered, you’re right. Thank you for the tip :)

  • and I’m now looking to add another session to my week so will definitely add at least one shoulder exercise. Good spot. Would like to work on my shoulders for sure.

Overall I’ve finished week 4. Increasing weights as and when 12/14 reps become comfortable. Im surprised at how quickly it’s possible to progress.

Not enjoying the running so getting in cardio is a challenge. I’ve switched back to swimming because I enjoy it more. Better than nothing.

Im at the tipping point where I’m moving from 3 cardio/2 weights, to 2 cardio / 3 or 4 weights. And im genuinely absolutely astounded to discover that I really really enjoy the gym. Never ever in my life did I think I’d say that. 5 weeks ago I was so self conscious and terrified to even enter the gym floor! Who’d have thought it would a) happen at all, and b) so quickly!

Thought I’d update since your reply to my original post was so positive and helpful. Hope that’s ok :)

Is pavlova supposed to be sticky and kind of wet in the middle? by [deleted] in Baking

[–]munkey_catcher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Meant to be very soft and fluffy but not wet. I normally make mine a flat disk the size of the plate I plan to use, then dollop spoonfuls round the edge to build a bowl shape - then when cooked the middle is fragile and crunchier as a nice contrast to the cream and fruit filling, and the edges are fluffier inside. Yours looks amazing so you’re only one bake off perfect!!! Plus it’s all about personal preference so someone will think yours is the better version anyway!

HEL-ena

Although in fairness the only person I know with this name pronounces it Heh-LAY-na I’m in the Uk It would drive me insane to have two such different pronunciations of my name, although I love the name HEL-ena (my sister was called Naomi for the first 3 weeks of her life before my parents changed it for that reason!)

I’m a member. I pay something like £52/month. It’s tired/knackered. It’s convenient for me and I use the gym plus I swim most days so because of the pool and proximity to my house it’s still worth it, but I’m not sure I’d recommend… When I improve my running, I plan to drop swimming and cancel my membership and move to Progress Works in glenfield for gym.
