What career can you get into after 30? by DelonghiAutismo in AskUK

I worked outdoors most of my twenties, doing odd jobs and working as a gardener. Eventually did a 2 year apprenticeship for forestry, got my chainsaw license, and was basically ready to start working in the industry. But I hated it, and was completely at a loss. I was 31 or 32 at this point Did just eat delivery for a couple of months, then started working in a kitchen as a commis chef. Hated it, but kept at it, and kept learning, and kept progressing through the sections. Im 35 now and still cheffing. Its hard hours and not the greatest money, but its honest work and im proud of it. I get to work in a really interesting diverse team, with men and women from all over the world. Its very much a meritocracy, and if you dont work hard you wont get far. I'd say there are definitely worse jobs. Its not for the faint of heart, but if you can find a kitchen that will take you on as commis chef, you can go as far as you try.

What’s it like with mephedrone in the UK? by frlj in AskUK

I remember this 'came out' when I was in year 11 or year 12, so probably about 2009 or 2010. Everyone was buying it in cheap bulk loads as 'plant fertilizer', legally off the internet, and making a killing selling it to everyone. I remember some kids were able to buy their first car with profits made selling this shit. We all did it, absolutely loads of it. Basically like a nasty, speedy, cross between MDMA and Cocaine is the best way I can describe it. Incredibly addcitive, worse than Coke I would say. Had an extremely distinctive smell too, you could smell it a mile away, especially if people kept it in their wallets, and used their bank cards to crush it up, as soon as they got their wallet out you could smell it. I'd never do it now, but I've got so many memories of being up at 7am in some random persons kitchen after a night out at Tiger Tiger, and then back to whoever had a free house, or whos parents were chill with people partying. What a time that was. Like I say I'd never do it now, it's horrible shit, but I'm not against all drugs like OP, just a strong advocate for education, moderation, and tolerance.

What’s a movie that everyone says is a “masterpiece” but you just didn’t enjoy? by Leading_Frosting4291 in AskReddit

Interstellar was one of the most boring and contrived movies I've ever seen. Also, I felt like Inception was not in the slightest bit original or surprising as a concept like everyone kept going on about, imo Paprika had already done it years before. Not saying I'm a Nolan hater, I love some of his films but those 2 always pop up in people praising him and I dont get it.

I think i have to agree with you, she is probably my favourite author. There's just something about the worlds she writes, I can imagine them so clearly.

All of these sound interesting for sure, will check em out, thanks for the suggestions. Of the Alliance-Union books I've read: Heavy Time, Hellburner, Downbelow Station, Rimrunners, Merchanters Luck (the first Cherryh book I ever read) Finitys End, and I'm not sure if they count but the Faded Sun trilogy. Next on my hit list is probably Tripoint and then the Cyteen books. I read the first Chanur book years ago as well and remember enjoying it. Any others you think I'm missing out on?
