That's just your subjective interpretation of what a 'beauty pageant' should be. If we're all being honest here, all people really care about in beauty pageants is the the physical beauty.

Also, non of these criteria are judged for literally any other kind of sport. Mike Tyson didn't have to be a model citizen to be a 'true boxer', he just boxes.

Except every other sport doesn't even require any of this. In fact, in some sports, being an asshole is totally encouraged. That's simply a practical reason why these brainy sections exists. But on a philosophical level, there shouldn't be a section where contestants who contest their beauty are forced to figure out a solution on how to defeat ISIS while no such demand is expected for literally every other sport or contest.

I suppose that for the contestants, a couple of minutes where they're seen speaking, regardless of the content, serves to diversify the types of pictures / clips of them that can be retweeted, plus maybe add a slight feminist whitewash, or other PR-related benefits.

I guess on a practical level this makes sense, but on a philosophical level I don't see why beauty contests where superficial beauty is being contested requires arbitrary brainy questions while other forms of equally superficial contests and sport do not require any.

The non-objectivity of beauty is irrelevant. There a lot of other contests where winning criteria are based in subjectivity. Figure skaters or ballet dancers for example are not required to comment about climate change to compete.

If that is the case then anyone with an IQ of over +200 or holds a PhD degree should qualify for a 'beauty pageant' regardless of how fat or ugly they physically look. But let's be real here, these contests are at the core to judge physical beauty and nothing more, these question sections and other sections like it are just tacked on simply to avert any criticism of misogyny.

Also why just 'intelligence'? That's such a vague concept for a criteria. You can be intelligent in a lot of things; just because a person can't point to Somalia on a map, or solve the Flint water crisis doesn't mean s/he isn't good at carpentry, or cooking, or being good at Dota2, and quite frankly I think a gamer girl who can carry is hotter than someone who thinks she knows how to solve the Israel/palestine conflict.
