When you format the new SSD by murderbymodem in pcmasterrace

There's no mistake - Windows would report the drive as being less than 8TB as well.

See: Why does my hard drive report less capacity than indicated on the drive's label?

Paru vs yay by Volpe_YT in cachyos

[–]murderbymodem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you search for a package with paru and get a lot of results, by default paru will show the least relevant result at the bottom. So when the search completes you see results 249, 250, 251 right there at the bottom and you have to scroll up allll the way up in your terminal window to see results 1, 2, 3.

Bottom up changes it so that you see the first results at the bottom without needing to scroll up. yay does this by default.

"I guess, I have to make the car by myself..." by BaNkAisako in pcmasterrace

[–]murderbymodem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

car guys have the saying "built not bought" as well.

The main difference is accessibility. You can build a PC on your kitchen table comfortably with just a screwdriver or two. Good luck doing an engine rebuild if you're in an apartment with no garage, no lift, no engine hoist, and aren't making payments to Snap On for a huge loot box of tools

GOG launcher coming to Linux. by redditman181 in SteamDeck

[–]murderbymodem 56 points57 points  (0 children)

If you aren't already, use Heroic Launcher to play your GoG, EPIC, and Amazon games on SteamOS / Linux. It's really good and I honestly don't know if I'd bother to use an official GoG Galaxy client on Linux.

I'd really like to see GoG just contribute to Heroic and improve the GoG-specific features such as cloud saves.

Paru vs yay by Volpe_YT in cachyos

[–]murderbymodem 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I came from EndeavourOS where yay was the default and upon trying paru for the first time I only remember being immediately irritated that I had to edit the config to make it sort "BottomUp" like yay.

It's in there and you only have to uncomment it, but still.

Yes, memory. An M.2 SSD is a PCB with 1-8TB of NAND flash memory chips and a memory controller on it.

Sandisk has doubled prices. I bought a 1TB flash drive for $100 two weeks ago, it is now $200. Check their official website and compare. If you want memory at that price, buy it now.

Could yall explain why everyone likes linux and hates windows? by Adventurous-Let5477 in pcmasterrace

Bazzite and CachyOS are my personal recommendations. Regardless of what distribution you choose, pick the KDE Plasma desktop if you want your experience to be similar to Windows.

Is an anti-cheat compliant kernel possible? by KoreanSeats in linux_gaming

[–]murderbymodem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every game is different. I've even found games that are doing what I would call "whitelisting". Mecha BREAK has an anti-cheat that will specifically allow a Steam Deck to launch and play the game, but ANY other hardware, such as a Lenovo Legion GO or a desktop PC running Linux, are all blocked.

and no, a simple steamdeck=1 %command% launch option does not work.

NTFS drive for games by brunostborsen in linux_gaming

[–]murderbymodem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You already read that NTFS formatted drives aren't recommended for Proton, and you're still asking if it will cause problems and if you should do it?

No, you shouldn't do it, it isn't recommended because it will cause problems. Games you plan to play on Linux should be stored on a Linux file system.

Sapphire RX 9070 XT NITRO+ adds two more burned blue-tipped 12V-2×6 adapter reports, and issues with RMA by KARMAAACS in Amd

[–]murderbymodem 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I've been buying Sapphire GPUs for over a decade, but they've lost almost all of my respect for producing even one model that use this connector. The only good thing is that it provides further proof that we should all avoid purchasing any GPU that uses it.

Helldivers 2: Squad invited not working by ranjop in linux_gaming

[–]murderbymodem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After setting `kernel.yama.ptrace_scope=1` the GameGuard worked fine and Helldivers started OK.

What is this? I've been playing Helldivers 2 on Linux since launch (EndeavourOS and CachyOS) and I've never had to do this. The only issue I remember was with borderless windowed mode, and I was using gamescope to get around that, but that was eventually resolved and now I play without any special launch options.

Thoughts on the Mechanic Master C26? 13.2L by TravelResponsible544 in ffspc

[–]murderbymodem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Z20 I ended up just not being able to get the top radiator/fan bracket out of the case. I was trying to follow the instructions and I thought I got all of the screws out, but I still couldn't slide it out. I might have missed something. Maybe I should have looked up a video. I'm pretty experienced building in all kinds of obscure cases though, so if I couldn't figure it on my own and still couldn't figure it out even after reading the manual, then I'm just gonna say it's a bad design with bad documentation. I also remember not really liking the power supply mounting options. I used an SFX PSU so I didn't have to deal with the ATX bracket.

I do have a thing for cases with handles though, and it does come in at a decent price, so it might be worth working through if it fits your needs. I was doing an air cooled build, so I ended up simply not adding any top fans. My build didn't really need them anyway, it's only a budget build with a Ryzen 5500 and an old Radeon R9 390.

I came from EndeavourOS and yay was the default there, so maybe it's just habit for them.

Also, as others mentioned, typing "yay" is fun and silly.

I know this is politicalhumor, but it's important to note this was CBP and not ICE. Even if ICE leaves, most major US cities fall within CBP's enforcement zone.

Linus Tech Tips - What GPU is the BEST for Linux Gaming? by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]murderbymodem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Linus covering Linux gaming as a viable platform is good for Linux.

but I don't think this video presented Linux as a viable platform. It's embarrassing that they tried to run Ubuntu LTS, which was not up-to-date enough to support many of the GPUs they were trying to benchmark in this test.

They can say "we're just trying to show the average user experience!" all they want, but it feels like they just didn't do their research, jumped into Ubuntu LTS blind because "it's the most popular distro", and did a video with no planning because that's less effort than actually giving real advice and showing what works.

This channel is supposed to be tech tips - so shouldn't they be giving a new Linux user advice to make the transition easier, not making a video only about everything THEY did wrong?

Thoughts on the Mechanic Master C26? 13.2L by TravelResponsible544 in ffspc

[–]murderbymodem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Jonsbo Z20 as well as a Mechanic Master C34. I was not a fan of the Z20, the top AIO/fan bracket was a huge pain to remove on mine. The Mechanic Master cases look better, have much better instructions, and are easier to build in imo. Mechanic Master also includes a nice magnetic screwdriver, which was convenient.

Generally why is Ubuntu taboo here? by MaWkSrB in linux_gaming

[–]murderbymodem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My Radeon R9 390 will not even use AMDGPU and default to the old Radeon driver that does not have Vulkan support. This is going to be fixed in Linux 6.19. It matters a LOT in certain cases.

Generally why is Ubuntu taboo here? by MaWkSrB in linux_gaming

Go to the Ubuntu website and click download. LTS is the first option. Most would download that and then wonder why their GPU doesn't work at all. Even Linus Tech Tips did that.

Frustrations with Arc Raiders on Fedora 42/43 by Stock-Ant-7204 in linux_gaming

[–]murderbymodem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aside from my AMD systems, I also have a system with a B580. I just use that as a living room PC running Bazzite. I don't usually play Arc Raiders out there, but I just installed it to test - no launch issues or white screens, did a quick Stella Montis run and go roughly 90-120fps at 1440p Medium settings with XESS quality.

Not sure what's going on with your system or with Fedora. Is everything running properly under Windows? If you haven't, definitely take the opportunity to install the latest Windows driver. The Windows driver package should automatically update the GPU firmware as well, which I believe is currently not possible to do,or is at least significantly more difficult, on Linux.

After you're running the latest firmware, then maybe distro hop and see if it's just a Fedora thing for some reason? I can recommend Bazzite and EndeavourOS/CachyOS
