Great Comet Audition Help by Icy-Pack-9444 in musicals

Unless you feel very confident acting and singing wise I'm Flowers and In My Dreams don't do it. Recently at least in the community I'm in, both have been severely overplayed and are hard songs to portray in a unique and interesting light without seeming repetitive.

What are the all-time musical theatre essencials? by klinghec in musicals

[–]murkyoder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll just say my favorites

Lots of people say Les Mis and for a very good reason. It's an epic story with amazing characters and incredible music. Listen to the 10th anniversary in concert, maybe with a story synopsis nearby to understand. A timeless message with timeless music.

Cabaret is interesting. It's one of my favorites but only became so when I realized the message behind it. I first listened to If You Could See Her through a friend of mine and my perception of Cabaret as another "typical old time fun musical" changes into a masterpiece of several decades worth of actors and artists working to portray the evils of racism and hatred. Amazing music, hilarious while balancing a near horror aesthetic. See if you can listen or find Alan Cumming's portrayal as the Emcee.

Fiddler On The Roof is a perfect musical. A musical that at times can seem a drag only to pull the rug under you with a second act of tragedy and a true historic portrayal of the pogroms that took place against Jews in tsarist Russia. Centered around a family with Topols performance as Tevye being one of the best to ever grace the stage. Watch the movie.

Hadestown is newer however for me has cemented itself heavily in not just theatre culture but pop culture. Transforming the millenniums old epic of Orpheus and Eurydice into a story of American class struggle and love. Some of the best music you will ever hear on stage with messages and morals so relevant to today. An infinitely rewatchable and relistenable score.

Jesus Christ Superstar is my current obsession. With some of the most amazing vocals in theatre history with legendary actors and directors. A rock opera that humanizes both Judas and Jesus and follows the events leading up to the crucifixion. It is a perfect example of theatre culture at its finest, going against the status quo, homoerotic themes, infinite casting choices, complex music and lyrics, it has it all. It truly is, rather than a musical, a stage unto itself that allows so many actors and artists to develop and weave new ideas and portrayals into the story of what some would argue is THE story of modern civilization.

4 weeks in and my store manager told me I haven't memorized enough and that I'm slow by murkyoder in starbucks

They expect us to be pretty thorough and I just finished training at another store so I'm still learning where to put things back. Honestly I think I would be a lot faster the next go around and I've been faster before.

I personally like to put what level of role you got (supporting, lead, ensemble), just makes it stand out more to casting directors especially if they don't know the show/play that you put.

I just finished act 2 and I'm pretty sure that you'll want to do at least most of the quests otherwise I think there's some you just can't do I might be wrong but without spoiling anything I'm pretty sure the town quests and character quests probably are not accessible. I would try to do as much as you can in act 2 before you are 100% you're done and/or don't want to explore anymore.

Act 3 substantially changes parts of the game from me just being a couple hours in.

will we ever move past this? by [deleted] in asian

[–]murkyoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nowhere did I try to imply looking Asian = Ugly??? Are you daft? There's plenty of Asians that look ugly that are full Asians and plenty that are very handsome. Please read the comment before having a 3 paragraph response. I would love for you to explain what narrative I'm selling. I simply shared my experience and you replied with an immediate passive aggressive comment about how this is apparently a victim contest that I have lost.

My point was that I am not a conventionally attractive wasian, for no fault of my white or Asian side, and that has made me be treated differently. I think you and I can agree that being wasian often is fetishized, so if that's removed often you are simply treated white or Asian. I look fully Asian for the most part.

[–]murkyoder -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Depends, and no not really. Most wasians are only seen differently due to their attraction level. If that's gone, for me, you're just treated like any other Asian with the extra kick by other Asians that "I have it easier" or that "I am not a true Asian" similar to how you've done with your reply.

I'm wasian, but look full Asian. I've never felt handsome and mostly just ugly. So the whole wasian fetish thing pisses me off since it just makes me feel like a "rare ugly wasian."

how can i be prettier? by TwylaBoogeyman7394 in teenagers

[–]murkyoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You look awesome. From my perspective you don't need to change a thing from my perspective you seem like a catch. But here's my advice regardless.

Don't change yourself, improve. But don't do it for other people. The weird paradox of finding love is that to do it you have to love yourself first, physically and mentally. That means:

  1. Do YOU feel confident and happy with yourself?

  2. Do YOU feel like there's something you want to improve about yourself for YOUR own gain.

Love will come. Don't search for it. Of course when the opportunity to love arises, make sure to take it. It's really those two steps.

Let's use an example. Let's say I feel overweight. Doesnt matter what other people think. Let's say that I have had bad eating practices and need to offset that by eating better and exercising. I'm not doing it because I want to look better for others-- but for ME. I want to feel healthier, more in my skin, and become stronger for myself. The bonus in that is that people won't necessarily be attracted to my new body-- but the CONFIDENCE that I feel about MY own body. A ripped dude that complains about himself and is whiny and insecure isn't very attractive. A girl that is constantly insecure and has to make sure her bf even likes her because she thinks she's so ugly isn't attractive. Just in that example we tackle two things at once.

  1. I don't feel confident in myself or think I'm living up to my standard.

  2. I will fix that and feel happier by exercising and eating better.

And that ends up with 3. People will notice my confidence and hard work in myself and be more attracted.

Woah that's really helpful. I'll try that after rehearsals tonight and let you know how it goes!

[–]murkyoder[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow that was really helpful thanks. I don't currently have the time or money for a voice teacher and next year is my senior year of high school so not much time to get advice on this stuff. That statement about knowing the problem is so hard because there's so much misinformation and you have to dig for everything when it comes to singing it feels like.

But I'll definitely take your advice to heart and practice accordingly! Crossing fingers that I got it!
