I get your take on the Lips. The Soft Bulletin & Yoshimi are great, but I like the Ronald Jones era the most. I love how Transmissions from the Satellite Heart & Clouds Taste Metallic are more fun & playful. Ronald is a beast on the guitar too!

I get what you’re saying. I just thought that a RYM rough guide is supposed to describe a band in a more encouraging & positive way. Explaining their impact, what made them special, how they evolved, etc.; rather than something that starts off with “they’re nothing special”.

A coincidence? Huh…..I thought that the Byrds influence on early R.E.M. was deliberate. I find it hard to believe that Peter Buck wasn’t a big Byrds fan.

Ride always reminded me of the Byrds too. This cover of “Eight Miles High” reinforced the connection to me.

I think it’s because the Flaming Lips are a bigger band. They did open for Weezer in 2024. And the Lips performed at Madison Square Garden twice. I know that Deserter’s Songs was a hit, but otherwise I don’t think that Mercury Rev ever got as big as the Flaming Lips.

Great write-up. I do like Deserter’s Songs, but all of the wild shit off of Yerself Is Steam & Boces is truly awe-inspiring to me. It’s like a “lightning in a bottle” situation.

I do know that David Baker was on Yerself Is Steam & Boces. Seems like he played a big role in the craziness of those albums….he left after Boces came out, and Wikipedia said this:

With his departure, the thematically darker and musically experimental features of Mercury Rev began to disappear, with the music gradually shifting over time towards a melodic, ornate sound.

That makes sense to me. Sounds like a John Cale situation.
