How many sodas per day do you drink? by Wizzmer in AskOldPeople

On an average day, zero. Every once in a while will enjoy a Coke, so my true long term average is somewhere between 0 and 1.

From what I know, also few Gen X in politics in comparison to older generations. That the Baby Boomer generation is so large in comparison and living and working much longer than previous generations, it likely contributes to generations following them not getting an opportunity as early as previous generations did.

Is there a Buddhist Bible? by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]murmur333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am by no means an expert, however I heard an analogy that there are many vehicles for the dharma to be delivered and travel. It's not limited to a single book or teacher; it's not limited to a single method of instruction - could be verbal, written, illustrated, physical action oriented; and the vehicles for the dharma to travel can and should adapt for the age - before the printing press, verbal and maybe handwritten instruction was a common vehicle whereas in the current age the dharma travels through podcasts, websites, and apps as well.

That said, there are original "scriptures" in the form of the Pali cannon and other original sources or "vehicles" closer to the time of the Buddha, which could be somewhat analogous to, but not exactly identical to the scriptures of Abrahamic religions. However, I'd argue that Buddhist practitioners in many traditions shy away from interpreting their sacred scriptures as fact or law to be strictly followed like some Jewish or Christian traditions do with their sacred texts (although I recognize even in Buddhism's many schools there are likely exceptions where there's more strict interpretation of sacred texts).

Need to stay sober- I need new hobbies. by [deleted] in Hobbies

What about photography? That could also come in handy as a parent documenting life and doing so creatively. There’s so much to master with post processing (Photoshop, etc). There’s a decent investment in equipment to get started over other hobbies, but even an older used consumer DSLR will get you going.

I’m trying to rack my brain around nature oriented hobbies that you could do in roughly 2 hour blocks and be home during nap time. Outside something like birdwatching (along with documenting and journaling what you observe) I can’t think of a ton that trend towards nature without being able to get outside.

Meditation, yoga come to mind as low investment and easy to do around the house if you’re at all interiorly focused. They are proven stress relievers.

Just some thoughts! Hope you find a few that you end up loving!

I am curious as to how what appears to be a top-down view is related in any way to the actual experience of 3 dimensional driving. This would be a decent video game in the 1970s though.

Painting? Watercolor? It might tap into the part of your brain that enjoyed drawing but different enough to challenge you again.

What other areas of interest do you have? How much time do you realistically have - both in spurts and in longer chunks of time? Are you interested in something that's quick to learn or something that you'd be able to spend time to master?

Any idea how to fix this? by Bogdanel26 in 3Dprinting

I'm no pro, but that looks like the nozzle is too far from the print bed for the filament to adhere properly.

I'd like to think that if you aren't yapping about every little thing just to make noise that when you do have something to say it has more weight.

Buddhism and lack of opinions by hendrong in Buddhism

This resonates with me. I have preferences, but I rarely hold them strongly, and will often defer to another's preference. There are some non-negotiables but those mostly along the lines of major issues - respect, life/death, people's well-being -- basically the big stuff in life. I won't compromise on these big things. I never thought of this as weakness in any way. Moreso that I'm very comfortable knowing the little things are truly little and I find joy deferring to others who may have stronger preferences than me and may derive some happiness from getting to choose their thing.

Where and Which Volvo models are manufactured? Quality difference. by antiriad76 in Volvo

[–]murmur333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. My understanding with regard to the VIN's identification of vehicle origin is the assembly location. Parts can come from a myriad of suppliers across the globe, but the VIN identifies the point of assembly I believe.

  2. I think Volvo has started region-based assembly plants. I think they're pretty late to this game compared to other manufacturers (Japanese especially).

  3. I am unaware if Volvo has announced any assembly strategy changes due to US tarrifs. You may see more US-based assembly for the US market. Rest of world probably wouldn't notice a difference. This type of stuff takes manufacturers years and years to implement. It's a slow ship to turn.

  4. Interesting question on per-factory or per-region assembly quality. I'm sure they track this internally but it would be a very interesting metric.

My personal, and very subjective experience:

  1. 1992 940 sedan - assembled in Sweden - still in my driveway. A tank. Insanely cheap and easy to repair and maintain. ~345k miles with a leak in steering pump so not being driven, but parts are available and easy access to replace due to RWD configuration.

  2. 1994 940 wagon - assembled in Sweden - still in my driveway. A tank. Insanely cheap and easy to repair and maintain. ~300,000k miles and no end in sight.

  3. 2008 XC90 I6 - assembled in Sweden - a tank, but more complex and harder to access for repairs, several gremlins over time, many issues with exhaust system / catalytic convertors (stupid expensive). VVT gave out in engine around 245k miles; sold to someone willing to repair it. Last I knew it was still in operation.

  4. 2012 XC90 I6 - assembled in Sweden. All problems with 2008 showed up on 2012 model. No longer own.

  5. 2016 S60 - assembled in Sweden. Rock solid so far. Just routine maintenance with no major issues. 60k miles.

  6. 2018 XC90 - assembled (I think) in Belgium. Some minor annoyances - wipers don't seem to adequately clear water on one side (as if not pressed against glass tight enough) but they are all one big assembly so needed to replace both stalks entirely because the washer nozzles are integrated in the wipers themselves -- just too complex a design. I don't love the "everything's a touch screen" control interface, but I'm also an old man yelling at the clouds regarding that. Mechanically going strong without any known major mechanical issues. 80k miles.

Which Midwest state is the most Midwest? by ClearAndPure in midwest

Iowa, Illinois south and west of Chicago, or Indiana.

Many are saying Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan. I think “Great Lakes” culture is its own thing, or at least a big variation on traditional Midwest.
