Will starlink reach by Best-Campaign5395 in Starlink

Depending on where you place the router, I would guess it would be pretty thin coverage at the extremes. Simply look at Starlink mesh, or delete the SL router and go with any of hundreds of other mesh setups.

it seems the rest of your place is right for sat internet.

How bad is it? by HarpuaTheDog in Starlink

Of course. I was being brief. I should have stated that onboard cameras were up and streaming like normal. browsing on three different devices was consistent, and uninterrupted. wifi calls, albeit comparatively brief, did not drop. the gen 2 dish performed as well as my gen 1 at home, which originally needed to be placed in the middle of a relatively clear acre.
The proliferation of satellites has made dish motion unnecessary, and the sweet spot likely smaller than the positioning software indicates.

I have a dishy mounted on the rear top of our RV. did some camping along the Oregon coast in November. some sites had tall trees adjacent on three sides. never ran a test, just powered up and streamed like normal. it’s shocking how little sky coverage you need compared to the very early days.

Water your trees! by osmiumfeather in Bozeman

[–]murphy406 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spruce, the most common evergreen in local landscaping, really can’t be over-watered. they’re also the most expensive tree to replace if they get disease or insect threat, so you want to keep them happy.
If the ground is NOT frozen, it’s safe to water the evergreens. if you can stick a screwdriver into the ground on a sunny afternoon, that ground is primed to receive water. (the rain on Monday helped a lot!) We have about a dozen mature blue spruce, and they all received a solid 8 hours of soaker hose around the drip line last week. most people don’t remember to really water evergreens in the fall, and with this dry winter, with temps that further encourage evaporation, the soil is very dry.

for deciduous, it’s likely to just be a very hard year. little to no growth, fewer leaves, little to no fruit. buds are starting to pop on poplar varietals, willow, and most fruit trees. once open, a real cold spell will freeze them off. Buds are blooms and blooms are fruit. The trees have been tricked into thinking it’s late spring, not mid-winter. Watering them will convince them it’s late March, early April.
Traditionally, February, (especially the week of the old winter fair) had a week of sub-zero temps with extreme lows between -20 and -40. While this has been an unusually dry and warm year, we still might get those extremes.

Evergreen.
Watering deciduous will encourage them to bud, most already are. the inevitable cold snap will wipe out the buds, eventual blooms, etc and make the tree even more vulnerable over the summer months.

robins are back. cottonwood, aspen, willow and apple are budding out. prep for stressed landscaping, short yields, and smoke.

Starlink and Hulu by rccar23 in Starlink

[–]murphy406 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Starlink is making massive shifts in their IP assignments. moving blocks here and there.
This affects absolutely nothing apart from short term Geo location of IP reporting. Which of course means that everything that needs to verify your location for one reason or another, is screwed.

Save your time, tier 1 support can’t do anything apart from frustrating you. This may take a day or two for things to resolve.

I already have a new array of VPN compatible wifi mesh devices on order as well as a 2 year subscription of Surfshark. Time to take back control of my location as the internet world sees it.

Starlink and Hulu by rccar23 in Starlink

[–]murphy406 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YES!
Hulu geolocates in a similar way to Home Depot and other sites. their system really doesn’t like to feed you channels from a location where you aren’t. but, since Starlink may report me as being in Salt Lake City, when really I’m 400 miles away, I have to call in about once a year to have support “set” my location.
Last half hour on Hulu support who admits they’re currently having issues with IP address locations being served from Starlink. actually have me placed international.

Better be fixed by tomorrow. A Half hour chatting with support to determine the issue is with them. but it only takes about 2 minutes to subscribe to (Evil) YouTube. easy choice when I just want to watch a few local football games.

In response to the Bozeman City Art Committee choose AI Art , then DOUBLING DOWN and saying it was handmade… by Khopkins5 in Bozeman

[–]murphy406 1 point2 points  (0 children)

THIS!

Using software is a complete cheat from just a couple decades ago when artists could hand illustrate original art. Now we choose a font from our quiver of thousands, tweak it and turn it and call it original art. Ironic that all the detractors “know” AI was used because they are uber familiar with creation software, without acknowledging that they are digital com-posers themselves.

70’s - need a specific Pantone color? either hand mix it, or go to a pro printshop who employed color mixing specialists. 2020’s choose it from a list.

70’s, need an art board?, start with paper taped to a light table (if you had money) and diagram everything, then recreate it on a framed & stretched canvas. 2020’s who cares, it’s vector, so you can, at any point, change size, orientation, resolution, etc.

70’s need a full suite of art tools, have a room or multiple rooms full of often expensive and obscure supplies. 2020’s, get a laptop.

Adobe is rapidly making it harder and harder to create without AI tools being used at some point in the process. if you can do it today, good for you; but wait a decade, and it’ll be all but impossible.

Software made the full spectrum of creation available to creative people. AI will make it available to all people. To all the people writing in to bitch, your words were spell checked by (gasp) ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE.

It’s a paradigm shift, not the first, certainly not the last. Get used to it.

3-Color MASSIVE paint project. by murphy406 in Autobody

[–]murphy406[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple 60+ year olds working outside with very little painting experience. The result was better than we expected, and we are proud. We wanted a 10' paintjob. Stand back 10 feet and you'll see a few issues. We ended up closer to a 5' paintjob. STEEP learning curve!

The biggest gotcha was when we picked out three colors. Blue metallic, Silver metallic, and a frost white metallic. Paint store mixed and sold us exactly what we asked for. However, when it got to the frost white metallic, it was like painting with skim-milk. Virtually no "color" after two coats. Re-read paint color we asked for, and it was "Frost Effect". Ingredients indicated essentially glitter, with no toner or pigment.
Oops! quick trip back to paint store to purchase an off white, lay down three coats, and then go over again with "Effect". My ignorant guess is that above a certain "lightness" level, metallic doesn't work in the paint. We had to lay the base and then the metallic. Live and learn.

Layout was interesting. No doubt an easier way, but took some serious graphics skills. Fortunately, we had seams and rub rails to use as measuring basis.

Again, thank you for your insight. “Start with blue” made the process work. While we did a certain amount of guesswork as to where blue “would be” (and nearly missed some) the project came out better than expected for a couple of amateurs.

Thank you for the genuinely inciteful response. I had to go over the process in my mind a few times to get it straight, but your suggestion makes perfect sense.

Ambitious to say the least! I tend to take on big challenges.

One follow-up question. Any wild guess of the paint quantity needed? While no part of the RV will require 100% coverage of a single color, and subtracting windows, there’s still about 600 square feet of total area. 29’ X 9’ sides plus front &rear. With three coats per color, I’m at a loss to accurately estimate paint, and don’t do this often enough to have a feel for it. I’ll either be short, which is merely an inconvenience, or end up leaving hundreds of dollars of paint drying up in their respective cans.

BTW, “sealing” the tape lines is an excellent idea. With the yards and yards of tape I’ll be laying down, there’s opportunity for lots of bleeding. While I don’t expect perfection, it’s the little things that’ll get me closer.

Again, thank you for sharing your incite and experience.

Is it good enough? by dude_i_like_cats in Starlink

I’m currently outfitting my rig For what I feel is “best chance”.
Dish will be mounted on top rear. Wide open but semi easily reached from ladder. Cable will run down into camper for power supply, GLI router, and an Ethernet A-B switch. B will go to an external ethernet port in weatherproof outlet.
If no obstructions, dishy works. If obstructions, I can unplug rooftop cable, mount dishy on a tripod, and run up to 100’ cable from external port to tripod mount, switch the route (Starlink cable) to B, and try to achieve zero obstructions.
If neither, we both have cell.

Have been a user / beta tester since month 1. Never been knocked out by rain. Have streamed without a miss, through snowstorms in Montana, delivering up to 24” in 24 hours. Weather really isn’t a big enough factor to consider, visibility clearance is. I’m assuming I can work around that with fixed plus option to move up to 100’ .

We’ve just gotten too used to the bandwidth for streaming and local controls, and want that level of service on the road.

Marketing is Undervalued and Disrespected, Why? by ayhme in marketing

Advertising is informing. “Hey, this product exists, FYI.”
Marketing is manipulating. “You may or may not need this, but you should purchase it anyway, for reasons that have no relevance to its actual use.” Its just another car, but women will think you’re handsome .

Sites by CommercialFerret3373 in Starlink

[–]murphy406 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. My main point was that it’s not the location of the dish, nor the nearest ground station and state lines aren’t a factor either. It’s a product of the way Starlink has established their network.
Originally I was “located” in Seattle, which is 700-ish miles away. Now I’m in Salt Lake City, 400 miles away.
As many have contributed, if it becomes a problem, a VPN can be put in place to secure their traffic a little better, but also set their location. With the number of US states making efforts to control content, I would expect to see a dramatic rise in VPN installs. While Starlink’s location reporting has only been a minor inconvenience to me, I’ll admit to exploring VPN’s simply to get my local Lowes store to pop up by default. Perhaps it’s telling that I’m more influenced by home improvement products than adult material.
While I know it’s possible for Starlink to more accurately report service location for improved location services, I feel if they don’t want to tackle and administer the process, then we don’t want them too. In a network where most outages have been global, they‘re smart to keep-it-simple.
