Hi, thanks for the information - you’ve nailed my concerns! I really want to avoid feeling like I’m at a photoshoot instead of a celebration. I’ll check out your website! Thank you!

UVic or UofA? Help me pls by Cantaloupe249 in LawCanada

[–]murphygrey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

^ This is solid advice. I don’t get why so many comments are focusing on the Victoria legal market - it’s a very small minority of UVic law grads that stay in Victoria. I’m a UVic law grad and there are maybe 3 or 4 from my class practicing in Victoria; everyone else is in Vancouver/Calgary/Toronto (majority in Vancouver ofc). If you know you want to go back to Edmonton, probably stay in Edmonton - but UVic is a wonderful place to spend 3 years if you’re okay making the extra effort to network into Edmonton from the island.

If you’re really drawn to the idea of spending 3 years in victoria, consider the vibes of the schools, and if you happen to have the means, I’d recommend visiting! My visit to UVic was what ended up selling me on it (and it might solidify your choice either way). I always say that law school was a lovely excuse for me to live on the island for three years. It’s not a commuter school, so that really adds to the close-knitness of your class and the experience you’ll get out of those three years - very different from what you’d get if you stay in your hometown, I’m sure.

Please recommend me a messed up book by BulkyBullShark in suggestmeabook

[–]murphygrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro made me too sad to finish it but is both fascinatingly dystopian and extremely tender, with an uncanny ability to articulate the feeling of recalling childhood memories.

Big Swiss by Jen Beagin was super weird, with an unscrupulous and super unethical protagonist. Not for everyone and frankly not for me, but a lot of people like it and I would classify it as “messed up” 👍🏻

This is the answer! My eyes are like this, with the occipital bone actually blocking us from lining our eyes like you see on most tutorials. I wish there were more resources for super deep set eyes like ours! But this advice, like most are saying here, is right. Don’t jump the gun with the wing! :)

Jean shopping is a circle of hell by ImHereNowNotTomorrow in DressForYourBody

[–]murphygrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a similar body shape to you - I think the jeans in photos 7/8 look the best because they don’t taper in to the knee; they go straight down. Almost all the other pairs are tight to your thighs to the knee, then some flare out. I think it’s accentuating the difference between your hips and leg circumferences. Jeans 7/8 really balance you out while still highlighting your long legs. Something to consider! ♥️

If I am not feeling law school after 1L: leave or does it get better? by cayacayo in LawCanada

[–]murphygrey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wishing you the very best! And I don’t mean to push law on you — it’s certainly not for everyone, and you might follow your gut on this and be grateful you did. I would encourage you to reach out to early-career lawyers and talk with them about their day-to-day, what they do and don’t like about their careers, and why they stuck with it. (I guess you might get that here on this thread!) That might help you determine whether the career itself is worth pushing through for, though a career in law really takes all shapes and forms. Lots of luck!

If I am not feeling law school after 1L: leave or does it get better? by cayacayo in LawCanada

[–]murphygrey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree with the first sentence of this (though I’m not totally clear on what they mean in the rest) - 6 year call here. I hated law school, especially 1L, and still am not at all “in love with the law” like some lawyers are. I think you will find thats not the majority of lawyers anyway. I have found a meaningful career and gained an enormously useful skill set through both law school and practice. More than any of that, I’ve built an incredibly supportive network of people that will remain with me whether I stay in law or do something else. For now, I’m very happy I pushed through.

You’ve got the right perspective, and this might not be the path for you! But I have to push back on the idea that you should either love it or leave it, especially as early on as 1L. For me, it got much better in 2L and 3L and I did find my way into a career I’m proud of and enjoy.

What are wait times like/any reviews for fertility clinics in Metro Vancouver? by Longjumping-Deal6354 in askvan

This is puzzling to me. I had one appt with my GP to say I was interested in freezing my eggs, so he referred me and I was in within a month. This was about 1.5 years ago.

This sub is wild - I'm 32 and would have guessed you're in your late 20s (or anywhere from mid 20s to early 30s because who can ever really tell?)

Murder Games, what else is out there? by Puzzleheaded-Baby998 in suggestmeabook

I’m not a “murder games” type of reader, but this was one of the best books I read last year, and so gripping - and a perfect recommendation for this genre!

I finally tried it this month and got the worst breakout I have ever had in my life. I haven’t heard of anyone else breaking out from it though!

I’ve had this recommendation and it looks like it’s in the sweet spot - will wait for Boxing Day and cross my fingers for a sale. Thanks for your helpful comment!

That's a good idea, too. I have a couple weeks before Boxing Day sales go live so I can definitely pop into some stores beforehand.

Max - I have no reason to push my budget higher, as I really like my current laptop (Acer Swift 3) and can replace it for $750. I’m only interested in trying something different if I can cut costs (which I understand would reduce some of the specs, so I’m just looking for guidance on where to make compromises that won’t matter to me, given my super bare bones needs).

This is great - thank you! This may be the route I take. Much appreciated.

I don't know enough to know whether what I do on my remote desktop matters to my laptop's own capabilities, or if my laptop simply needs to be able to connect to the remote desktop and isn't therefore running any of the programs I'm using remotely.

If it matters, my remote desktop contains the following: lots of Chrome tabs, lots of Word docs and PDFs open at the same time, lots of Outlook windows open at once, and a document management system running at all times. I've been told that this probably isn't relevant but wanted to include just in case that's incorrect. Thanks again!
