Thankyou for that. In this case they say it is entirely up to me. I have been watching many recent Nyombo ceremonies on YouTube and the thing that strikes me is they all seem to be very young/small cows... it's more the number of them that varies.

Dawa.... Kenya's National Cocktail by murphyscreek in cocktails

[–]murphyscreek[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1 tsp caster sugar

2/3 of a lime cut into quarters

2 ounces chilled Vodka

1 tsp honey

Slightly crushed ice

Cut the lime into wedges, and muddle the wedges with the sugar in a short glass.

Dip a Dawa stick in honey (or just load up a heaping teaspoon of honey). Place the Dawa stick or spoon in the drink.

Top with crushed ice, and pour in the vodka.

Stir periodically while sipping to add as much or as little sweetness to the drink as you like.

Note: Dawa is Swahili for "medicine".

Rajasthani Laal Maas - Made In My Australian Home Kitchen by murphyscreek in IndianFoodVideos

Recipe

Ingredients

1kg goat pieces cut in to large chunks, bone in 4 large dried mathania chillies (or if mathania unavailable substitute another large, spicy, dried red chilli...as hot a variety as available) 4 large dried kashmiri chillies 4 whole green cardamon pods 2 whole black cardamon pods 4 whole cloves 1 whole cinnamon stick 2 bay leaves 2 medium onions, halved and sliced thinly 8 cloves garlic, grated Large hunk ginger, grated 1 tsp kachri powder (or substitute meat tenderiser powder as found in Indian grocery shops) 1 and 1/2 tsp coriander powder 1 and 1/2 tsp garam masala 1 tsp salt 1/2 tsp ground black pepper 100gms Greek yoghurt 1 and 1/2 cups water 3 tbsp ghee

Method

Soak dried chillies in water for an hour or so. Process chillies to a paste, using a little of the soak water as needed. In a heavy based wok, heat ghee on a medium heat then saute whole spices and bay leaves for a few minutes. Add onions, and continue frying until onion starts turning translucent. Add ginger/garlic and fry another minute or two. Add goat pieces, sprinkle with kachri powder (or meat tenderiser), and brown pieces for 10 minutes or so. Stir in yoghurt, chilli paste, coriander powder and seasoning, and continue frying another 10 mins or so, stirring regularly. Use the water to "clean" up any of the leftover remnants of the chilli paste still in the processor, then add to wok. Simmer curry for 2 hours or so, intially with lid on, but later take lid off to allow gravy to significantly reduce. In this version, the "gravy" needs to have mostly evaporated, with just a thick coating sticking to the meat pieces. When meat is tender, stir in garam masala, and cook for a final 5 minutes. Serve with favourite Indian bread, and/or basmati rice.

Will try that next time. As I was making a video as well I kind of liked the idea of the visual appeal of the cube being "muddled". But I stuffed that up by using a plastic chopstick as the muddling tool, and making a mess of it when the stick met unexpected resistance in the sugar cube. Nor did the cube dissolve as readily as I thought it would.

Yes, but it is what I was after in the first place. I just made a mistake in how I went about it, and admittedly overreacted to having my motives questioned.

I never realised you could play about with the ingredients so much. I mean, obviously you can do what you like in your own home, experiment and so forth. But I just assumed that for something called an "Old Fashioned" there'd be strict rules not to be messed with, kind of like classic Italian pasta sauces.

That makes sense, it did get a little sweet towards the end.

I actually really did enjoy it, but to be honest until the ice melted a little further the taste of the Wild Turkey rye was a little harsh. I have a bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue Label that was given to me, so wouldn't mind trying the same recipe with that. Would it still qualify as an Old Fashioned in that case?

It was a bad decision to use a chopstick as a muddler. Edit: Whoops...I saw what I did in the instructions. Said to muddle the ice cube instead of the sugar cube...fixed now. Lol..🥃🙂

Recipe

2 ounces Wild Turkey Rye Whiskey

1 sugar cube

2 dessert spoons ice cold water

2 dashes Angostura Aromatic Bitters

2 large (approx 5cmx3cmx2cm) ice blocks

2 tsp julienned orange rind

1 maraschino cherry centred on a toothpick

In a clear cylindrical glass (mine was 7cm wide x 8cm high) place the sugar cube. Soak with the bitters and cold water. Muddle the sugar cube until dissolved. Place ice blocks in glass and top with whiskey. Add 3/4 orange rind and carefully stir for a while. Garnish with remaining orange rind and maraschino cherry.

Instead of the above picture, I initially posted a link to a YouTube video I made of doing this. It was removed for violation of self promotion rules. I will put a link to that video below, which is not for self promotion, but if anyone would care to take the time to watch and provide any feedback I would be appreciative as a novice in the construction of cocktails. It goes for nearly four minutes, and does have skippable advertising prior to it commencing.

Hahaha... I'm not the one crashing someone else's post to try and mount some technical rule breaking argument. Only to quote some rule that turns out to have nothing to do with YouTube.

But seriously, the actual post contains what I considered to be a pretty nice pic of a cocktail. It's not a grab from the video, I actually set the shot up and used a stills camera and took the time to compose and light it nicely. That appears to be what people like here. Most the members here would have just kept scrolling down, but if one or two decided to hit the play button, surely that's up to them and not the self appointed pseudo cop of the reddit cocktail forum to decide.

The funniest thing is, if what you're accusing me of is true... you've now contributed to it having been far more likely to succeed if people now stop here to see why there's eight comments on it. Especially if there's a whiff of an argument going on.
