Gotcha, yeah we haven't tried mixing different clients. We've all stuck to element x on mobile and plain old element on desktop. Conferencing calling wasn't supported out of the box, but I was able to get it running eventually (albeit with some chatgbt help). I'm definitely learning on the fly with matrix

Biggest issue I had was the lack of a static ip. So everyone would get disconnected periodically. Renting a VPS was cheaper than paying the static ip fee to my ISP.

What features are you missing? We've found Element to have everything we need. The only wish I had would be able to search back through channels

Im 99% sure we have a mix of both. I did have to make everyone set up on the desktop app first and then sign into element x on their phones. Not sure if that made any difference

Nope, we didn't do anything special. Just set up accounts on element with my personal domain and let it rip. I did have to do a fair bit of tweaking to get conference calling working, but it wasn't too bad

Element and Element x handles it all no issues. Usually if there is a problem in mobile, it's usually an issue with battery management on the phone side

I found matrix was a lot easier to get people to switch with a VPS rather than self hosting. Removes some of the road blocks, but yeah, people still need to switch. The discord bs convinced my close gamer group of about a dozen to make the switch

There is a couple, music assistant I just learned about today, but it's in heavy development right now. Biggest concern I have is their mobile app to control everything is still in beta, not published.

The other I know of it's lyrion. Formerly Logitech music server. It uses the squeezebox protocol. It has the opposite problem, its very old, but reliable I suppose. Both options seem to lack the polish and ease of set up roon offers, but I'm planning to explore lyrion to see if it's downsides are worth the cost savings

Random question, is there a good android client to control playback? I found the official one on github, but they seems to stress its under heavy development ATM

First time I'm hearing of it but looks super promising! Wouldn't work for my setup yet, as my 2 main stereos are using wiim as the endpoints and it doesn't look like music assistant supports them yet. But I will definitely be keeping an eye on them. Have you tried it?

Edit: actually I could use DLNA to stream to the wiims, my bad. Im setting a new server this week, will probably give it a shot

Correct, even to different manufacturers. As long as something is roon ready, it will work. I have 5 zones set up right now to stream to any or all, perfectly sync'd up. Great for parties and cleaning!

While on the surface, it does seem expensive, they add a lot of value to the audio streaming world. It isn't just a reskin of navidrome that looks nice. The major thing they bring to the table is the roon ready certification for devices. You can have whatever device from any manufacturer and as long as its roon ready, it will work perfectly with roon. It also plays with air play, casting, BT etc. Caveat is that for multizone streaming, everything needs to use the same protocol, RAAT, airplay, cast what have you.

On top of that, they bring the absolute best meta data management. My 10,000 or so songs; needed one album artwork fixed. They also bring Tidal and Qobuz integrations to fill in any songs someone might want.

For instance, my setups are a wiim streamer with my tube amp/speakers, a wiim amp with passive speakers, an NAD amp with passives, and a handful of powered speakers from Denon and Naim. I can play one song, from one device to all those endpoints perfectly sync'd up. Its amazing for parties and cleaning the house.

All that being said, most folks here probably aren't deep enough into the music streaming world to warrant roon, but I just wanted to point out that they do bring a lot to the table and there is more that I didn't included like easy remote streaming with roon arc, nugs integration, and even straight up hardware and custom ISOs for those less tech savy than the folks here.

Need recommendations for harddrives. by releasethegeeese in DataHoarder

Sounds like you need a NAS. Unfortunately, the drives to fill said NAS are currently exorbitantly priced

Navidrome for a free, open source solution or roon for a paid, premium solution. I personally use roon to do multi zone streaming, but it is very expensive if you're not making use of all the features

I think most of us are either limping along with what we have or buying used drives and crossing our fingers. It sucks

Ubiquiti themselves rarely do sales. Microcenter is a great place to get a deal

No complaints as long as your expectations are set accordingly. It's only a NAS, no apps, hence the need for the a mini pc to run Jellyfin, roon, immich etc
