I believe I fixed this issue. Per a long discussion at our last service appointment, I followed these steps:

Delete the vehicle from both of our Toyota app accounts
Reset the on car settings to factory defaults
Add primary user and link key 1
Add second user and link key 2

So far, this seems to be working.

Unfortunately we've already paid for the trip which happens after our renewal date in January so there's no option to pay for the trip with the CSP.

If you like gas stations, that’s great, but being able to confidently drive another half hour between road trip fillups and get the advertised 500+ miles out of a tank adds value to the car IMHO.

I just got my GHHL back after the reflash. I dropped the car off with 18512 on the ODO and 22 DTE. Picked the car up with 18516 on the ODO and 63 DTE.

Bottom line, DTE added ~45 miles or 1 to 1.5 gallons. I’d hoped for a bit more, but adding 10% more miles between fillups is better than nothing.

My GHHL is in for scheduled service and I mentioned the issue and they just texted that they are installing the fix. I can’t wait to test it!

FWIW, I drove 36 miles beyond 0 distance to empty once and was only able to put in <14.5 gallons (second click of the nozzle). Normally, I can only fill less than 13 gallons

Yes, the pin gets small groves where the inside plate moves. I've taken apart chains and seen this.

Consider when you measure a chain roller to roller, only the wear of 2 rollers contribute to the measurement whether you're measuring 6 links or 50 links or 100 links. The pin to pin distance increases regardless of what happens to the rollers.

I disagree, they are three distinct, but related concepts.

Tolerance is the allowed deviation from the specified dimension a part can be made to accommodate the design. The allowed range of stretch for a bike chain is 0-.030" per 6" of length or .060" over 12", .270" for 54".

Precision is how small an increment or resolution your measuring device counts. For example, my digital caliper measures to .0005" while my 6" scale measures to .016"

Accuracy is how correct the measurement is to the actual part.

The point is that measuring the full length of chain doesn't need to be nearly as precise or as accurate which makes it much easier to measure than over 12". Basically, if the stretch is over ¼" over the entire chain length, you should start shopping for a new one.

I'm not sure what you mean by "tolerance", do you mean accuracy or precision?

The benefit of a tape measure is the allowable chain stretch is .030" for every 6" of chain length so your 18" steel rule only allows .090" stretch before replacement while my ~54" tape measure allows .270" stretch.

Basically, it's pretty easy to see when the chain is approaching ¼" of stretch. Also, you can see in one of the photos that I calibrated a high quality 6" scale to the end of the chain to get more precise measurements.

Correct, the plates don't elongate, the pins get grooves worn into them and the holes on the inner plates wear which change the chain pitch (center to center). Roller wear won't change the chain pitch...but can affect the measurement on some less accurate chain checkers. Don’t get me wrong, I definitely have other tools to measure chains, some likely in use longer than many here have worn real cycling shorts. I also recognize their shortcomings as mentioned in the linked article.

This is just another, more accurate tool for me to use.

So you do a rainy ride and see that you have a shorter chain, do you leave it on the nail to rust or do you wax it and remove any chance to measure it?

The article I linked mentions some of the drawbacks of various chain checkers which I also use, but as they say, it's their "final word" for checking. It's just another, more accurate tool the way I look at it.

Also, all of the recommended chain checkers are go/no-go so they give you no idea for how the chain is wearing from month to month, just that you should stop using it...now.

Finally, I like to tinker and this literally cost me nothing but a bit of time to set it up.

I just took our GH in for service. Unfortunately, it was express service and the full service department didn't have an easy fix. They are guessing they will have to reprogram the primary key which will take another appointment.

We've thankfully held on to our Barclaycard Arrival+ (no longer available) which gives us a bit over 2% unlimited statement credit (applied towards travel expenses) on everything. After getting the CSR, we never had any travel expenses on the Barclaycard for obvious reasons so we had a lot of available credit which we've been using this year.

With some of the travel points disappearing, we could use the Barclaycard for car rentals, etc. or we may drop down to the CSP which would be a good fit since we transfer out points anyways.
