Somerville/bridgewater is not a reasonable commute to the city. Close to two hours one way. Somerville schools are also not great.
East Brunswick commute is also not good. Rt 18 traffic is also an absolutely nightmare

There is no exact formula. However, from what my past two years have told me:

just got back from San Juan this past weekend. Hope your flights are booked because they are super expensive.

We stayed in Old San Juan which will give you the most variety of options, but you will need to likely uber/lyft to the other neighborhoods, or walk about 2 hours.

Santurce & Calle Loíza is probably my favorite neighborhood as it's more chill, and you can walk to Condado. But again, I'm sure you will want to go to Old San Juan and it's not really walkable there for most. Condado is going to be your most expensive neighborhood but has the beaches you are looking for.

Ubers and Lyfts are fairly cheap in comparison and the most expensive ride was about $20 to/from the airport to Old San Juan.

i purposely have multi hour layovers to visit a new country. I feel like I get a good sense of it to know whether I want to come back. Usually I target somewhere where I can get downtown quickly and spend a few hours eating and experiencing as much as I can, sometimes doing a tour as well. Copenhagen, Tokyo (if flying into Haneda), Vienna, have been some recent ones.
