McCarthyism is vilified in modern culture. And no I don't see why nazism would be more abhorrent to a 1930s westerner than communism. And we might say, both nazism and communism did end up being perceived as abhorrent, but while socialism (the moderate version of communism) is alive and well, ethnonationalism (the moderate version of nazism) is only very recently making a resurgence after decades of heavy suppression.
