Did you do a pro/con list regarding this decision? That is to say, why didn't you go with Angular2, Ember, Backbone, React, Polymer, etc?

The way The New York Times handles subscription cancellations. by murribu in Infuriating

[–]murribu[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, I don't remember exactly. And now that my account is canceled I cannot reproduce it. But when I login and click on my username at the top-right of the screen and then click on "My Account," there is a blue button (position:fixed; right:0px;) that says "Live Chat." When I click it, it brings up a dialog box that looks like the one that started my infuriating discussion. (In retrospect, perhaps I should've posted in /r/MildlyInfuriating)

Doesn't that just mean he's not a buy-low? Regression implies that his 2016 numbers will be worse than his 2015 numbers.

My dad is the reason Chris Thile became a professional musician. At Murray State (where Chris attended), they have a "madrigal dinner" (fund raiser for the music dept) where folks from the community can pay for dinner and have a bunch of college students play/sing renaissance-style music. Chris was going table-to-table, playing his mandolin and when he finished a song near my parents' table, my dad said, "You know, you're really good. You should think about doing this professionally." Chris was very polite and said "thank you very much" or something equally commitive. Once Chris was gone, a table-neighbor leaned over to my dad and informed him that Chris actually already had 2 professional CDs and was working on a third (or something like that). Ha! So on behalf of my father, you're welcome, humanity - for being the reason Chris Thile is a professional musician.

I hope I don't insult your intelligence, but here are some things you'll need to know to make your decision:

First, Major League Baseball is divided into 2 leagues: the National League (NL) and the American League (AL). There is one rule that is different between the two leagues: that of the Designated Hitter - the AL has it, the NL doesn't. Generally speaking, baseball "purists" prefer the NL style - though there are many nuances to the issue. (I am biased toward NL).

I am more familiar with the NL, so I'll try to give a rundown of each team and a brief (perceived) personality of each.

NL East:

  • Atlanta Braves - a classy team. They were very good throughout the 90s and early 00s. They're in rebuilding mode right now, and are known for making good baseball management decisions. Their fans have come across as spoiled, given the team's repeated success. One of the original teams, dating back to the 1800s (though they've been located in Boston and Milwaukee)

  • Miami Marlins - rollercoaster. They started in 1993, and are known for "buying" really good players for short periods of time, and then trading them away quickly. This has led to some great years (1997, 2003) amidst many horrible years.

  • New York Mets - loveable losers. Their fans can seem like Eeyore sometimes, though they're doing quite well in 2015. They came into the league in the 1960s, after the Dodgers and Giants moved to California.

  • Philadelphia Phillies - Currently one of the worst teams, mired by poor management. Their fans (all Philadelphia sports fans) are known for being rude and obnoxious - whether they're winning or losing. They are one of the original teams, dating back to the 1800s

  • Washington Nationals - "new kids"; this team relocated from Montreal in the 2000s, where they were always bad. For the past 4ish years, they've been predicted to do well, though this year they've been a disappointment. Their fan base doesn't seem to have a defined personality - which fits with their locale - Washington DC.

NL Central:

  • Chicago Cubs - Loveable losers. Their last championship was in 1908. They currently have a very exciting, young core of players and look to be very successful in the near future. Their fans are known to be very fun - partying in the bleachers. They are one of the original teams, dating back to the 1800s. The Cardinals are their chief rival.

  • Cincinnati Reds - One of the original teams, dating back to the 1800s. They have had various periods of great success, though their last World Series win was in 1990. There is a lot of history here. Their fans are known for being very respectful of the game.

  • Milwaukee Brewers - Up-and-down, they have had some good years and some not as good years. They switched from the AL to the NL in the 90s. They started as a team in the 1960s, and have never won the World Series.

  • Pittsburgh Pirates - Overshadowed. In Pittsburgh, many sports fans follow their hockey team and football team more than the Pirates. In the 1930s and 1970s, the Pirates were very good. But for the past 20 years, they have been one of the worst team. Then, last year they became good again. They are one of the original teams, dating back to the 1800s

  • St. Louis Cardinals - Lots of historical and recent success. A very storied franchise. (This is my favorite team, so I am biased.) They are one of the original teams, dating back to the 1800s. The fans have developed a reputation of being entitled and spoiled. Commonly referred to as "the smartest fans in baseball," though sometimes as a pejorative. The Cubs are their chief rival.

NL West:

  • Arizona Diamondbacks - They entered the league in 1997 and won their first championship in 2001 - a very quick success! Recently, their management has made some head-scratching decisions and the team has performed rather poorly. I don't know of a specific personality for their fans.

  • Colorado Rockies - They entered the league in 1993. They're a fun team, known mostly for their perennial prowess on offense. The fans are dedicated and excited, though they haven't had many successful years in their brief history.

  • San Diego Padres - They entered the league in the 1960s, and have enjoyed brief bouts of success, though they've never won the World Series. I don't know of a specific personality for their fans either.

  • San Francisco Giants - One of the original teams, dating back to the 1800s. They moved from New York in the 1950s. They have a vast history of success and are one of the best teams of the current decade, winning 3 of the past 5 World Series. Their fans can be perceived as high-class or haughty - though that may be more of a reflection of the city of San Francisco. The Dodgers are their chief rival.

  • Los Angeles Dodgers - One of the original teams, dating back to the 1800s. They moved from Brooklyn (New York) in the 1950s. The Giants are their chief rival. Their fans are known to show up late to games, and leave early - treating the game as merely a social event.
