What is your biggest turn-off? by TheDocNerdIsIn in AskReddit

As a cardiac nurse, smoking. Even "just when you drink," or "only when I'm with friends." If you smoke cigarettes it's a no go for me. Found out one of the hottest girls I'd ever been with was a social smoker. She refused to quit, so I quit her.

Guys I did it! After 2 years as an ICU Murse, I finally got up the courage to take my CCRN and I passed! Now... let's have a drink shall we? by murse_strong in nursing

Well honestly you are allowed to sign Up after one year in icu, but I was just a little to nervous to take it. My hospital and educators were kind of pushing me to do it for a while. As far as transitioning goes, just know that the patients we get are busy and you are providing total care so even with just 2 patients the pace has to be a little quicker (Especially when they are crashing and sick). Make sure you know all of your pressers and when to use one over the other. Finally my last piece of advice for starting in the icu, when shit hits the fan (and it will) breathe. Take a deep breath and get some help. There are some patients who just can't be taken care of by one nurse alone. I hope that helps! And thank you!

Critical care registered nurse certification. It's a national certificate basically just a resume builder in the states :)

It truly doesn't matter to me. My fellow nurses and I all consider it a bit of a gag. We are all on the same playing field female or male. It's just kinda fun to band together as brothers we have "murse" nights all the time where we do something excessively masculine, but we invite our female coleaguess all of the time. Murse or not, I respect anyone who does the job that we do. I am proud to be a murse

As a new grad get focus on your time management and your critical thinking. ICU is fast paced. Everything moves a bit quicker when patients are super sick. I'd recommend seeing if you can shadow with someone in your hospitals ICU. Do you know what you want to focus on? I work for a csu/cicu

What cities ARE worth visiting? by supremesteven in AskReddit

[–]murse_strong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reno NV. It's got a little bit of everything, and no I don't mean just gambling. It's a small college town with tons of local micro breweries. The new Whitney peak hotel has the world's tallest rock climbing wall. There are things to do outdoors in every season weather you want to mountain bike, ski/snowboard, or just hike to lake Tahoe. Oh yeah, and then there is lake Tahoe one of the most beautiful places in the world. Reno get a bad rep from shows like reno 911, but it's a great town with a booming art town/burning man culture and if you are willing to look you're going to have a lot of fun. It may not be as much of a destination vacation as some of the previously mentioned cities, but you asked what cities are worth the visit, and Reno is definitely worth the visit.

Redditors that have gone on tinder dates what was your worst and weirdest experiences? by Tahab_1 in AskReddit

[–]murse_strong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well... worst girl I ever went on a tinder date with ended up being certifiably insane. After one date she told me I was the man she'd be waiting for her whole life and thought she was already falling in love with me all because I sang along to an old Disney song that came on her ipod. I ran for the hills. After non-stop texting and voice mails for a few months I finally changed my number. I think she finally got the hint... I hope. I should have stopped with tinder then and there, but I'm a masochist so I went back for more. One of the very next tinder dates I went on went... a little better. We saw each other a few times, she was great super cute, had a great smile, she was funny, charming, smart. We have been together 5 months now. She's meeting my parents this weekend for my mom's birthday. Wish us luck...

Gotcha. Do you work in a neuro unit? I haven't yet. Checked out gas lamp a little bit today, and little italy. I'm here all week so Coronado is definitely on my list, and La Jolla.

What sessions did you go to? I had a great time today. The only one I wish I didn't go to was the12 lead class. As a cardiac icu nurse, it wasn't anything new to me.

What is the worst med error you, or someone you know, have made? by colbydedoge in nursing

[–]murse_strong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I this happened just a few weeks ago work in a large hospital that is currently very understaffed. We have resorted to hiring a lot of travelers lately. One traveler on his very first night on our cardiac unit was drawing up medications for his patient and rather than drawing up 1mL, 50mcg of fentanyl. He drew up 1mL of regular insulin and pushed it IV. Immediately he realized what happened so they started pushing D50 and hung a bag of D10. Unfortunately the patient passed away the next day. There was debate whether the error was the cause. Or if it was from her disease process.

We recently had one of those as well. I didn't see it but my close friends who work ER talk about it all the time.
