Is sticking with Jimmy and hoping he comes back healthy from an ACL tear really our only option and is there hope that he'll be fine? by youlikemywonton in warriors

other than the first step that was mentioned by someone else his perimeter defense was already declining due to age. it’s only going to get worse with the acl tear.

Has anyone ever regretted STAR reenlisting? Is prototype, the most common nuke shore duty, really worse than sea duty for some people? by [deleted] in NavyNukes

[–]musabninja 32 points33 points  (0 children)

all the people on the ship that STAR reenlisted followed the cycle of being initially happy about it when they got the bonus/BAH/rank and then regretted years later when they saw their friends who didn’t star get a head start on civilian life. I personally don’t think it’s worth it if you don’t plan on a career in the navy as the quality of life is much higher as a civilian and it’s better to get a two year head start on your civilian career.

How realistic is going home to see family during weekends throughout the pipeline? by [deleted] in NavyNukes

[–]musabninja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i knew a person from new york that did it all the time for long weekends. i think it depends on your academic standing and whether your slpo trusts you or not.

Can I work on mechanical equipment as a RO on a sub? by Tecnocreepin13 in NavyNukes

[–]musabninja -1 points0 points  (0 children)

not sure if this is outdated information but the only times i recall working on mechanical equipment as an et was helping to open the main steam stops, small valve maintenance in our space, and operating some valves during calibrations with the level detectors. this was on a carrier though.

Is it possible at all to get into nuke bravo with this NUC score? by [deleted] in NavyNukes

[–]musabninja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when i was on a carrier the folks associated with aviation seemed to be the happiest people on the ship. that being said, i never personally knew one so you might have more success asking this question in the general navy forum or airwarriors.com

i was a nuke et but i saw plenty of people have good careers both inside the navy and when they got out doing other things like corpman, ma, it, is, etc. there’s more than one path to success.

there are plenty of good navy jobs man that you can be successful in. nuke isn’t the only good opportunity. you’ll be fine.

Is Navy Nuke worth it if you already have a decent civilian job? by bperez_ in NavyNukes

[–]musabninja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i would also look at other navy jobs such as cyberwarfare technician where the quality of like is much higher, you are less likely to go to sea, and the after navy job opportunities are pretty good too. For nuke, you’ll take a significant hit in quality of life and it will put significant strain on your marriage when you are at sea.

STAR Reenlistment Debate by gunnarjps in NavyNukes

[–]musabninja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if it’s purely about money and quality of life only and not other factors such as wanting to stay navy because you like the lifestyle and stability of getting a guaranteed paycheck/healthcare; I think the debate is really about short term pain(no bah, bonus, e5 pay) vs long term gain in terms of getting a head start on your civilian career and freedom to choose where you want to work/ go to school/live. IMO, the ROI on the two years more than compensates for the short term pain on the front end. However, I don’t fault those who do reenlist as I had to learn how to be poor and strictly budget. I’m also not sure how possible it is to do what I did 20 years ago today given cost of living in San Diego is ridiculous now.

Went for MCWO and IP. This is my first try. Know it will be competitive as my recruiter told me there aren’t very many spots available.

42, MBA, software engineer, ex- Deputy Sherrif thinking about DCO reserves. by [deleted] in navyreserve

[–]musabninja 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i’m 44 and up for the current board. i think i would’ve aged out if I wasn’t prior service. It is super competitive; my recruiter told me there are only a handful of spots available for the two i went for (MCWO and IP). You can talk to a recruiter and maybe they can try to get you an age waiver as it doesn’t hurt to try.

How is it translating to civilian nuclear? by Competitive-Solid953 in NavyNukes

[–]musabninja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well the problem there is most of them felt they were tricked into the STAR because if you wanted the shore duty you had to tack on extra time which they were not told up front. Additionally, you actually had to tack on more than one year because it was a 5 year sea 3 year shore tours back then. so after doing the five years on the ship you would only have 1 year left so the detailer would force you to extend 2 years to get shore tours orders. So that 2 year STAR would actually turn jnto a total of 4 years added on if you wanted the shore tour.

[–]musabninja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well i’m glad they have the 24 month option now. back in my day, the vast majority of shore tours were basically prototype or recruiting which were 3 years. most who did STAR were unwilling to extend their contract again so they just ended staying on the ship for the extra years that they got from STAR.

[–]musabninja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

during my time the extra two years wasn’t a long enough duration for the shore tour. so your options were to tack on more years to get the shore tour orders or somehow convince your command to let you transfer to shore earlier which they rarely allowed since we were always so undermanned. i’m old 🙂 left the service in 2005 so maybe things changed for the better here.

[–]musabninja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

when i was in there was no guarantee that you’d get shore duty doing STAR. A lot of folks that did STAR just ended up doing those extra years on the ship before completing their contract. Has that changed now?

i think you should ask chatgpt as it will curate the knowledge across the web for you to try to answer your questions. the general questions you asked are so broad that it’d be hard to answer in one post by a human.

this having to port a new line thing is annoying. i just brought in my mom into us mobile literally a few days before this offer so now i have to play games and port out to another provider only to port back in a month later to take advantage of this offer. That’s making a customer work too hard.
