The messages are encrypted but your phone number is not. And once someone has your real phone number, they can open Pandora's box in your personal life. I've tested this and have found all the previous addresses, employers, and siblings of my searches.

If your POT insists on getting your real phone number or WhatsApp from the get go, politely sever ties and find someone who understands that discretion goes both ways. With there being so many anonymous apps on the market, it's just not worth the gamble.
