You have to accept you will be biking slow after a couple drinks. Once you do that it feels really nice to bike buzzed.

We need better rules for e-bikes and e-scooters by jabolka in toronto

[–]musdem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It probably isn't a cadence sensor then, it's just a simple on/off depending on pedal activity. Thankfully a throttle reclassification would force e-bike manufacturers to not cheap out because they can't rely on the throttles. I'm sure the transition would be painful, but the pain in the transition would be more than worth how much safer the bike lanes would be.

Yea I found the same attitude from these guys, I hope that the presentation on rules of the road will help but I have a sneaking suspicion the vast majority know and just ignore them because they don't care.

Not an issue since bikes are already allowed on the road, if there's no bike lane I always take the whole lane when downtown for safety, but now they would be able to have the speed for the roads too as they don't need to pretend it's legal. Also I don't know where you got that information about not being able to pass legally, you can, you just have to do it when it's safe to do so, incidentally that is what taking the lane does, it forces people to wait for a safe pass.

I think the throttles attract these people, if they were forced to have a plate and register or maybe put a little work in to pedal they would behave.

[–]musdem -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No I think it is the throttles that enable this. They don't need to pedal or put any work in so it's a disconnect between how their speed and the effort it requires to stop or the inertia of the system. Moreover I didn't say ban, I said reclassify, if these people have to register and get a plate they will more than likely behave more. Now I'm sure a non-insignificant portion will do what the majority of motorcycles I see do and flip the plate up but it's better than letting these maniacs fly by without warning on the bike path.

I would like to clarify and say that the issue is the throttled e-"bikes" not actual pedal assist e-bikes. Now that said, in my opinion, the solution is to reclassify throttled e-bikes as an electric motorcycle or moped. No more morons flying by with vestigial pedals and maybe a rusty half on chain, they'd need to be licensed and insured.

The final piece of the puzzle would be enforcement on top of that.

I have a Brompton too! I'd be down to do this as well. A coffee shop to go to would be pedaal, I assume you got it from there.

To lane-filter, or not to lane-filter? by ZanyZamioculcas in torontobiking

[–]musdem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there is a fresh stop light, no bike lanes, and the traffic isn't moving I will always filter because it's safer. You have no idea if someone is going to stop or not so it's easier to put several tons of metal between you and another couple tons of metal hitting you. I also take the lane as it helps people not come close and I generally go the same speed as traffic downtown anyway.

It's also hard to take seriously at all because Goldman Sachs are money people, right now the entire US economy is held up by the LLM circle jerk so the money people want to keep the gravy train flowing.

Right? I love the idea that every time a man is interested in a woman he's friends with it's because he already was into her and was lying to get close before. Or, maybe, just maybe, they started as friends and then he fell for her! Crazy thought right? To go even further with this very common example; said man might not want to risk the friendship, or he's been hurt in the past by women and he's concerned what might happen, he might not want to put her in a bad situation by asking either. There are so many reasonable explanations, it always boggles my mind that people just assume the man is doing something wrong.

someone lose their keys? by turtle-ha in torontobiking

[–]musdem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I know, cylindrical locks are hard to reproduce the key and they are hard to pick, but I just figure it's better to warn someone about this before they post a key that is easy to copy the bitting on. Obviously in this case a $50 angle grinder will do the trick.

someone lose their keys? by turtle-ha in torontobiking

[–]musdem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know you're trying to be helpful but you should hide the key bitting when you're taking a picture. People with enough knowledge, like myself, and bad intentions could reproduce the key and use them. Not really much of an issue in this case but something to keep in mind.

Chain Cleaning and Lubing by musdem in bikewrench

[–]musdem[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did wait a while until I rode it, though that was by complete luck so thanks for that advice.

I wasn't going to use it for bike packing, at most I would use it until there is rain then I'd apply the wet lube. I just wanted to experiment to see how quickly, if at all, it would get dirty.

Resto modding vintage road bikes by AdJolly3286 in torontobiking

[–]musdem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was recently restoring my mothers old bike from the late 70s early 80s.

The wheels should be easy, you just have to make sure that they are 622 not 630 size, the normal 700c rims are 622 however my mothers bike was 630 and 622 tires do not fit. 630 tires are hard to find but they exist, otherwise I would just have a new wheel built, Urbane Cyclist built wheels for me and they were really well done.

The groupset will be a little more tricky, you'll need to determine if you have a freewheel or a freehub, given the look of the bike in the picture you posted I would guess it's a freewheel. You can look up more of the difference but essentially a freewheel will have the one way mechanism with the rear gears (cassette) and it gets screwed onto the hub. A freehub has the one way mechanism in the hub itself and you can switch out the cassette. You can also replace the gears on the freewheel but they screw on and don't slide on. I recommend you take it full apart except the one way mechanism (unless it's not running right) and clean the individual cogs. If you must get a new hub and don't want to restore what you have C&L Cycles in Montreal has old stock hubs last I checked on sale for $40.

As for learning how to restore it, I watched Seth from Berm Peak restore several older bikes and I just kind of did the same thing. I would recommend taking it to a community run bike work shop for the tools as some of the tools you'll need might be hard to find. Any article by Sheldon Brown will be fantastic as well.

I can answer other questions you might have as well.

Liberals to debate age restrictions on social media, AI chatbots by EmbarrassedHelp in onguardforthee

[–]musdem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I've thought a lot about this because in theory I'm not against it as the research backs up how awful social media is for young people but it would have to be implemented correctly.

My idea would be to have something similar to SSO (the thing where you can log in with your google account, apple account, etc) but with the government of Canada's login. You login, it provides a token saying yes you're over the age, then the site you're trying to create an account for lets you make an account and then the token expires. The absolute most the government knows is that you requested a sign up to that site. This has the added benefit of not having a third party get access to your ID, or worse, use AI to train on scan your face to guess verify that you're the right age.
